Annabeth Chase and The Last Olympian Chapter 2

I woke up the next day and headed down to eat breakfast with my Cabin. I was incharge of the Athena cabin. Well we were eating I noticed Percy sitting at his table by himself. He looked worried, which he had a good reason to be worried. After breakfast I caught up with him to do our chores together. I was told to inspeact cabins while he had some documents to sort through for Chiron. We normally did our chores together to make them less boring and finish faster. We started at the poseidon cabin, Percy's cabin. Percy tried to give himself a four out of five because he messily made his bed and straightened his horn on the wall. I made a face at him. "You're being generous." I used the end of my pencil to pick up and old pair of his running shorts. He snatched them away. "Hey give me a break. I don't have Tyson cleaning up after me this summer." "Three out of five." I said. Percy looked like he wanted to argue but thought better of it. Percy tried to sort through some papers as we made our way to Aphrodite's cabin. As we entered I wasn't surprised to see the beds all perfectly made, clothes put away neatly colour cordinated, and fresh flowers along the windowsills. Percy tried to tell me he wanted to dock a point because the room "reaked of designer perfume" but I ignored him. "Great job as usual Silena" I said kindly. Silena nodded listlessly. She was sitting on her bunk with chocolates on her lap staring at pictures of Beckondorf that covered the wall behind her. "You want a bonbon" she asked. "My dad sent them. He thought- he thought they might cheer me up." I remembered her Dad owned a chocolate store. "Are they good?" Percy asked. Silena shook her head. "They taste like cardboard." Percy tried one shrugging as I passed. We promised to see Silena later and kept going. As we passed the commons area a fight broke out between the Apollo's and Ares's cabins. Two archers ran by, chased by an angry Ares kid who was yelling in poetry. "Curse me eh? I'll make you pay!/I don't want to ryhme all day!" I sighed. "Not that again. Last time Apollo cursed a cabin, it took a week for the ryhming couplets to wear off." Percy shuddered. "What are the fighting about anyway?" he asked. I ignored him as I scribled some notes on my inspection scroll, giving both cabins a one out of five. After I was done I looked up and noticed Percy staring at me. "That flying chariot." I said answering his question. "What?" "You asked what they were fighting about." "Oh. Oh right."I explained wwhy they were fighting over it when the chariot swooped down dropping bombs on some Ares kid, who was rhyming cuss words. Seaweed Brain looked pretty impressed."We're fighting for our lives" he said "and they're bickering about some stupid chariot." "They'll get over it" I said. "Clarisse will come to her senses." Percy didn't look convinced. After inspecting the other cabins we finally made it to mine. Everything seemed cleaned and orderly, until I noticed my bunk. "Vlacas" I muttered to myself. I pretty much just called myself an idiot in greek. My brother Malcom surpressed a small smile. "Yeah, um ... we cleaned everything else. Didn't know if it was safe to move your notes." I couldn't be mad because I would have been awhole lot angrier if he would have touched my stuff. Malcom grinned at Percy. "We'll wait outside while you finish the inspection. They all filed out the doors as I quickly tried to clean my bunk. Percy stood there pretending to go through his reports. As I cleaned I thought about the rule stating that no two campers were allowed inside the cabins alone. This rule was highly enforced when Silena and Beckendorf started dating. I closed my laptop that Daedalus gave me last summer and Percy cleared his throat. "So ... get any good information from that thing?" "Too much," I said quickly. "Daedalus had so many great, I could spend fifty years just trying to figure them all out. "Yeah" Percy muttered " That would be fun." I shuffled my papers thnking. I decided to try something. "You know ..." I brushed my hair behind my ear. I always do that when I'm nervous. "This whole thing with Beckendorf and Silena. It kind of makes you think. About ... what's important. About losing people who are important." I said nervously. Percy nodded. "Um .. yeah" he stammered. "Like ... is everything cool with your family?" I nodded disappointed. I was really hoping he would just come clean and tell me how he feels. I mean I kissed him last summer, I'm the one who should be nervous. But figures stupid boys... "My dad wanted to take me to Greece this summer," i said wistfully. "I've always wanted to visit the- Parthenon" Percy finished for me. I managed a small smile, "Yeah". "That's okay, there'll be other summers right?" I didn't answer him. He really was a Seaweed Brain. How could he say that when the end of the world will be here in five days. I looked at my inspection scroll. "Three out of five for sloppy head counselor." I muttered. "Come on lets finish your reports and get back to Chiron." On the way we finished reading the last report. "Dear Grover," Percy read out loud. "Woods outside Torronto attacked by a giant evil badger. Tried to do as you suggested and summon power of Pan. No effect. Many naids' trees destroyed. Retreating to Ottawa. Please advise. Where are you?- Gleeson Hedge, protector'." I grimaced. "You haven't heard anything from him? Even with your empathy link?" Percy shook his head dejestedly. Nobody has heard from Grover in a long while and we were starting to get worried. "Annabeth," Percy stopped my by the tetherball court. Finally, I thought maybe he'll tell me how he feels. "Listen, I had this dream about um Rachel..." Then he went on to tell me the story. This whole Rachel thing was really eating my last nerve. As he finished I rolled up my inspection scroll. I rolled it a little too tight considering I accidently ripped it. "What do you want me to say?" I said to Percy angrily. "I'm not sure. He said looking at me carefully. "You're the best strategist I know, if you were Kronos planning this war, what would you do next?" I answered him truthfully. "I'd use Typhon as a distraction. Then I'd hit olympus directly, while the Gods were in the West." "Just like in rachel's picture" He said thinking. "Percy," I said my voice tight. "Rachel is just a mortal." "But what if her dream is true? Those other Titans- they said Olympus would be destroyed in a matter of days. They said they had plenty of other challenges. And what's with that picture of Luke as a kid-" "We'll just have to be ready". I said. "How?" he asked. "Look at our camp. We can't even stop fighting each other. And I'm suposed to get my stupid soul reaped." I was so shocked I threw my scroll down at the ground in anger. "I knew we shouldn't have shown you the prophecy." I said trying to keep my voice from breaking. "All it did was scare you. You run away from things when you're scared." He stared at me like he couldn't believe what he was hearing, which made me even more mad. "ME? Run away?" he asked arguing with me. I got in his face and looked him directly in the eyes. "Yes YOU. You're a COWARD, Percy Jackson!" I was fighting to hold tears back as Percy seemed to realize that what I just said had a double meaning. "If you don't like our chances," I said nearly crying, "Maybe you should go on that vacation with Rachel." "Annabeth-" "If you don't like our company" I cut him off. "That's not fair!" He said trying to argue but I pushed passed him having enough of talking to the idiot. I started heading to the strawberry fields, hitting a teatherball as I passed it leaving it spinning around the pole. I couldn't believe he was so clueless. Why couldn't he see that I liked him, I mean I hint about enough for heaven's sake I KISSED the boy! .... I pretty much cried for the rest of the afternoon alone in the Strawberry fields, hoping Percy would come after me and confess his undying love for me. But ofcourse that never happened. I stopped crying for Percy and began crying for Luke. Luke who promised he'd never hurt me, yet here he is fighting to destroy the world. I loved Luke. Only last summer I realized I loved Luke more like a Brother, I loved Percy as a, well ... Luke was still good though. He was fighting to stop Kronos, I just knew it.

Later that afternoon I stopped crying, and wiped my face enough so that I could attend the assembly to burn Beckendorfs burial shroud Percy was there but he didn't try to talk to me so I ened up, leaving without a word to him after the ceremony. Afterwards I attened my afternoon activities and spent the rest of the day with a couple of my siblings. They seemed to sense something was wrong with me, but they never brought it up and I was quite thankful for it. That night I couldn't sleep well and ended up crying more about Percy and Luke.
