Her father didn't talk to her the next morning and left early for work when she sat down at the table for breakfast. She barely even greeted her mother and kept her eyes on the ground, while she slowly munched on her pancakes.

"Lameez," her mother started casually, while rinsing plates at the sink with her back turned to her. "What are we going to do about zis now? About ze boy."

Lamees didn't look up as she swallowed another mouth full of pancakes, that tasted like sandpaper how matter how much syrup she put on them. When she answered, her voice was low. "I'll take care of it. I won't let it happen again."

"Okay," her mother said, in a flat voice. She didn't seem convinced at all but Lamees didn't say anything more.
