Letter to a Filipina Girl

Girl,
Do not love me for being an American
You assume much about me
If you really knew who I am
You'd see I'm not rich in my country

I won't pursue you, this I also promise
Because you're a Filipina so beautiful
Our skin and status is of little importance
When compared with the eternal soul

This I seek of you (and ask you seek of me)
That your eyes and admiration
On the Lord, would be fixed ultimately
This is grave and of no little importance
For:

Though we have potential
We are two finite vessels
We need a supply
Or we'll soon run dry
If we trust and rely solely on each other

Neither you nor I can create love
It is a Divine gift given to us
It can't deliver or save, it won't be enough
If by it we glorify these frames of dust

In the times of trial
The seasons of sadness
And the hour of hardship
Like a moon destined to rise and chain the fallen
Mortal love without God
Becomes the enemy of confusion
Treacherous and bitter
For it has not yet known redemption

To endure forever strong for you, I am unable
For we are not just limited in mortal love's supply
But also fragile vessels of clay; a passing aesop and fable
The one we must depend on is the Potter, the One who gave us life

The storms of this life have easily broken me over and over
And I have seen with each time only He can put me back together
He is our perfect Physician and Potter
We are His children, and He our Father

(The world has rejected God
And replaced Him with a hardened heart
As a solution to survive
The disappointments of life)

You only ask for trouble and disappointment
If I'm the one you bank all your heart and
Hopes, rather than One who is perfect and never fails
You lean wholly on one who will stumble, whose strength is frail

Yet in all this I do not ask or advise
To quit considering or never try
To not consider me as the roof
To a potential, future house
I only ask that you do not see me as it's foundation
Pause and redirect your love to God
Who is the Pure Source and Sovereign Salvation

If you and if I make Him
The first and most important love in our lives
Then by His grace and blessing
We will be given this confidence:

To be able to faithfully live life together
And be assured of a "happily ever after"
If you, like me, have given Him your heart
Then you will know and not be afraid to love
And we can be bound together
Till death do us part
