Joe's POV
When we pulled out of the driveway and I heard what was on the radio, I started complaining. "Ew! Haley, how the hell do ya listen to this crap?" "Shut it, Gatto. I like country music, so does Bessy, so deal with it," she winked at me through the mirror and I stuck my tongue out at her and she rolled her eyes. "Would you rather listen to opera?" Kerri asked. "Hell no!" I yelled. "Joe calm down," Sal mumbled. "Shut it, Sally." "So what the hell are you singing when we get there?" Murr asked Haley completely changing the subject. "I don't know. I have a few songs in mind, but I'm not sure on which one I want to sing." "Haley sing Falling Slowly!" Rosalie yelled at her. "That's a great idea," Haley smiled. "And you should play the cello with it!" Kerri screamed. "I don't have it in the truck." "I bet they have one there."
"Even if they do, I don't have the sheet music and it's been since ninth grade since I played that song." (I am playing "Falling Slowly" this year and I would post the sheet music here for cello, but I don't have it with me right now.) "You'll be fine," Bessy murmured. "You've been practicing for years," Rosalie commented. "I know, but-" "No, buts, that's what you're singing and playing." Q and I laughed because they pretty much boss Haley around. Sal turned in his seat and glared at us. We shrugged and he slapped us. "Fuck you Vulcano!" I smacked back. "I'd rather you not," he laughed. Haley sighed and pulled into the parking lot.
We all jumped out as soon as she parked and walked inside the bar. Haley walked straight to the DJ and asked something I couldn't hear. The DJ nodded and pointed to the side of the stage. I looked over and saw a lot of instruments, but the one that stood out was a dark brown cello. Haley walked over to it and I heard her gasp. "Oh my god!" She yelled. I walked over and asked, "Why are you freaking out?" "Joe this is my old cello!" "How do you know?" "You see this black spot on the side?" I nodded and showed me a picture on her phone. It was the same cello. "How did it end up here?" I asked.
"My orchestra teacher gave me a new one and gave this one to this bar I guess." All of a sudden I heard footsteps behind me and Bessy stood next to me. She held a folder in front of Haley's face and Haley snatched it. "It fell out of your case I guess," Bessy smiled. Haley opened it, grabbed what I assumed was "Falling Slowly," and gave the folder back to Bessy. Haley took the cello and went on stage. There was already a cello chair for her, a stand, and some weird looking thing to stop the cello from slipping underneath her. Everyone quieted down and all their eyes were on Haley. Sal was sitting as close as he could to Haley and I smiled at the sight. Haley made sure the cello was in tuned and once it was, she took a deep breath and started playing the opening notes, which is five measures long. Then she sang the first few lines of the song....
"I don't know you
But I want you
All the more for that
Words fall through me
And always fool me
And I can't react.
And games that never amount
To more than they're meant
Will play themselves out."
I was absolutely in love with Haley's voice because it was so beautiful and perfect. I was surprised that she could sing and play the cello without messing up because I would find it highly difficult to do both at one time. She looked up and glanced at Sal. She smiled and I saw Sal smile back at her.
[Chorus:]
"Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice, you have a choice
You'll make it now."
I loved this song so much and I knew it could be my wedding song with the love of my life, Bessy. I knew she was the love of my life, but I don't know how she feels about me. I'm usually not nervous, but today is one of those days. The chorus of this song was amazing. It was just perfect and I wanted to tell the original artist how amazing their lyrics are.
"Falling slowly, eyes that know me
And I can't go back
Moods that take me and erase me
And I'm painted black
You have suffered enough
And warred with yourself
It's time that you won."
You could tell that Haley was into the song. The way she sang and played every note with so much focus and dedication showed that she loved this song. She picked a great one to play and I hope she'll play it again eventually.
[Chorus:]
"Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice, you have a choice
You've made it now
Falling slowly sing your melody
I'll sing it loud."
As Haley sang the last few parts of the songs I stood up and clapped loudly. She slowly stood up and faced the crowd. Everyone was clapping for her, but I noticed Sal wasn't. I walked over to him and saw he was wiping tears out of his eyes. Haley walked off stage and came over to Sal and I. "You okay Sal?" She asked sweetly. Sal looked at her, stood up, and hugged her tightly while whispering, "You were perfect. I loved it so much." She smiled at him and started to shove me and Sal on stage. "What do you think you're doing?" I asked. "You boys are going to sing the charity song," she smirked and went to get Q and Murr. I groaned but went onto stage. Q and Murr joined Sal and me after like twenty minutes and I slapped them both. "What was that for?" Murr yelled at me. I shrugged and gave them both a microphone. 'This better be good,' I thought.
