Coming Full Circle

"You can't talk about yourself like that Riley!" I yelled at her, she looked up at me as if she was dazed, "Why not?" I knew exactly what I needed to say, but somehow I was at a loss, "Because.. you're too amazing, and I care about you Riley!" I struggled to find the right words, after all, we're exes so I didn't want to say anything to make her think I'm interested anymore. "You care about me? How?" Her voice almost sounded as if she was taunting me, trying to find a deeper meaning behind my words. "Yes I care about you Riley! I care about you so much! I left my friends to talk to you, I gave you shelter when you were having a rough time, I gave you a place to sit when you had no where else, that's how much I care about you." She furrowed her eyebrows and it was almost as if her eyes could see right through me. Almost as if she could see the lies I told everyone. Because I wasn't over her, never have been and I don't think I ever will be. Truth is the butterflies still won't settle when I hear her say my name, my stomach does flips everytime she gets near my face and everytime her hand grazes my leg, I still can't concentrate because my mind can only think of her. I'm still crazy for her and it drives me crazy because she's happy with her new girlfriend. I gave her advice on her girlfriend, I told her girlfriend to ask her out, I did this to myself I created my own hell. Riley's phone buzzed it was the ringtone of her girlfriend and I waited for that signature smile to spread across her face but it never came. Riley sat down putting a hand to her face as the tears welled up in her eyes. She put her phone down and took a deep shaky breath. I sat next to her grabbing her phone, "I can't do this anymore, goodbye Riles." I clenched my jaw putting the phone down, "Keep it cool for Riley, she needs you right now." Soothed the voice in my head. I placed a hand on Riley's thigh, "Hey it's gonna be okay. She's gonna realize that she made the biggest mistake in her life and she's gonna regret it. She just lost the best thing in her life, I'm sorry Riles." She looked up at me and there were tears in her eyes. She was holding something in and I could see it in her eyes, "Come on Riles let it all out." She chocked on a sob and then she leaned over to me placing her head in the crook of my neck. I could feel the hot tears on my neck and I rubbed her back telling her it would all be okay over and over again. She pulled back wiping the last tears away and in that moment she looked so broken. I had seen her beaten down before, but this was different. She looked as if she had just reached the edge of a cliff and in her mind all she had left to do was jump. She stood up and I copied her, scared she was gonna run for the door to do something stupid. "Please I don't know what's going through your mind right now, but I'm begging you to stay. Please Riley, I promise you things will get better." My words seemed to lift a tiny bit of weight off of her shoulders and she looked at me, "Maya I've been like this for so long, everytime I choose to stay it only gets worse." Her voice was weak and shaky, I took her hand in mine, "Riley, all those other times I wasn't there for you. I'm here now. I'm going to stay by your side and I'm going to help you beat this hell you've been living in. I promise." I searched her chocolate brown eyes for any hope that my words meant anything. It seemed as if something clicked in her mind, she looked down at our hands and back up at me. I quickly let go, "Um I'm sorry.. i-it was j-just an instinct.. u-umm." I was a stuttering mess, what had I done? Riley smiled up at me and everything happened so fast it was almost like a dream. She grabbed my hand pulling me closer and suddenly her lips were on mine. I don't know much but I do know that kissing her was like swimming on a hot summer day, like listening to your favorite song, like when the 4th of July fireworks boomed in the sky and it made your heart race a little faster. Kissing her felt amazing, it made my heart race and my stomach do flips. She pulled back and rested her forehead on mine. Her hands were on the nape of my neck and my fingers were hooked through her belt loops. I pulled her closer to me kissing her as if I wouldn't get another chance. I pulled away and we locked eyes, "You're my forever, I'm sorry it's taken me more than one breakup with you to realize it but I'm crazy for you and I never want to leave you again. I-" I cut her off with my
lips and I wasn't letting go of her this time. We were gonna be always and forever.
