Chapter 60 –  Ride (Samson Conrad POV) Pt. 1

"We knew they'd follow us," Luca groans, his eyes flicking to the rearview mirror briefly. "We left in a weird way and they acted weird, they had to know we were hiding something, or that they were hiding something," he continued. Gripping Fatima tighter in my arm, I continue to rub her back softly; my stress ebbing as I try to remain what I bet is the most uncomfortable sleeping position.

I smile though, hiding my face in her hair.

There was a time when Fatima could not accept a cup of tea much less close her eyes and sleep with anyone around. Yet now, here she was, warm breath fanning out against my neck, her breathing evened out and heartbeat just as regulated as she went into a light and quick slumber.

I wanted to say that it was only tiredness, but I had the sneaking suspicion that instead of fighting her sleep, she wanted to dream – that's where she found... answers. Sure they weren't much but each piece helped.

Groaning I shift to glance over my shoulder at the black Hummer and Silverish Ford Pickup Truck behind us.

Besides me, Imogen continued to flex her fingers and grind her teeth annoyingly in her fear. Each time looking down at the laptop on her thigh, but unable to keep her attention focused on whatever she was researching now.

"What do we do? How – I checked the car there are no tracking..." I take my glasses off, searching even as the car moved.

Up front Rafael shook his head at me.

"I don't think that they actually tracked us. I mean there aren't many ways to go; all they had to do was have someone watching the state highways... I mean we were bound to use one of the like what? Three ways out of there," Rafael counted up front.

"Yeah but Xan in the Hummer and that quiet one that just gaped at Fatima, Mack," I spoke at a whisper, ready to wake Fatima but not actively trying to do that. Heck it had only been ten minutes, and it was after seven when Luca finally placed them.

"They merged onto the state highway when they saw the truck. It is a good means of way to travel and all but it sticks out like a sore thumb," he said almost annoyed and reluctant to point out the obvious.

"We should have used the tunnels," Luca grumbled, remaining in his lane as more and more a few cars joined us, putting space between us and the Hummer and pickup truck trailing us.

Fatima's warmth builds in the next thirty minutes, her body shuddering a few times despite that body temperature increase.

Every once in a while I look back, wondering how much longer the Hummer and pickup truck would trail us. What was their end game here? Worse? I started to wonder if maybe Fatima had been right in her first assumption. We could go much further in this truck than cars around us, however what if when we out drove the Hummer and pickup they easily called someone else to follow us?

With intense concentration, her eyes narrowed, Imogen ducked forward, her neck elongated as she kept her eyes on the two cars following us. "They – the Ford has – is that the same?" she mumbles, sitting back after a while her eyes seeming to lose focus.

"They have OnStar," Imogen says after a minute, pointing towards the back window. "We can – well not us but your Aunt can – listen in using their OnStar system!"

"I say we report their car stolen and then call in a tip," Rafael proposes after Imogen has spoke. My brows push together, a bit of a frown on my face at his proposal.
