~THE NEXT DAY~
Anna's POV

I'm going to the arcade with Joshua today after school.

Lord, am I excited.

I start getting dressed in my best casual outfit.

A navy blue and white striped jumper, some black skinnies and white chunky sandals.

A spritz of perfume here and there.

And a touch of lip gloss.

"Anna!" Mum calls. "Anna, finish up. You need to eat breakfast before going to school."

Breakfast, I think. Why can't I just skip it? That way I can get skinnier. So Joshua will like me.

"Mum, I don't need to eat breakfast." I say back. "It's just one stupid meal."

"Anna, this one meal can fuel you for the whole day."

She comes over to my room's door and leans on it with arms crossed.

"No, mum. I don't want breakfast."

"Anna, I know this is about Joshua. You shouldn't let your health go down the drain for some boy."

"He's not just some boy, mum." I say sternly.

"When are you going to realise that all men are the same, Anna? You saw what your dad did to us!"

"This isn't about Dad!" I yell.

Depression is taking over me. I say "Do you have any idea how much it takes to get a guy to even notice me?"

Mum sighs. "Anna, hon. You're beautiful just the way you are."

"No I'm not, mum. Not if I want Joshua to like me."

"Well, maybe you shouldn't even like him in the first place if it's like that."

"No, mum. I really like him. And now he's finally noticing me. Please don't ruin that for me."

She sighs again, this time in defeat. "Fine. Finish getting ready. I don't care if you have breakfast or not."

After touching up my hair, I decide not to have breakfast after all.

The car ride ride to school is silent. When I get out of the car, Mum doesn't say bye much less glance at me.

I know she's disappointed in me.

~After school~

The school day went by really slowly, mostly because what mum said to me kept nagging me in the back of my mind.

Maybe she's right, a voice deep in my mind tells me.
