House of Levers/House of Doubt

Jared, Jonah, and Tyler headed out of their rooms just after lights out and snuck off into the cellar just when Mr. Carroway disappeared into his office. Jared and Jonah led Tyler through the tunnels, through which Tyler crawled across the beam. They came to the current set of tunnels they had been working on, passing by the first task and carrying on to the second task/first room.

Tyler looked around, surveying the sun, the moon, the dome of stars overhead, and the three levers. Tyler crouched down and shines his flashlight over inscribed writing at the base of one lever which read: Aten, the solar. He then went to the next lever across the room and at the base he read: Isis, 'ruler of the stars'. He came across the final lever which read: Nut, the Heavens.

"Well...?" Jared asked, growing impatient.

"I think these levers control different parts of the room," Tyler explained. "For instance, that one-" he pointed to the one with Aten inscribed on it, "-is meant for the sun. That one-" he gestured to the lunar lever, "-is the moon. And this one-" he gestured to the one next to him, "-is the sky, or...this dome...Egyptians believed every day was a twelve hour cycle, and the nights were their own twelve hours. Perhaps we use the levers to mimic the cycle."

"I call moon," Jared announced, heading to the lever of Isis.

"We're doing this now?" Jonah asked.

"Why not? There's enough of us," Jared admitted.

Tyler shrugged and grabbed the lever next to him, and Jonah took the one which controlled the sun.

"Just stop pulling the lever when your object is back in the same place as it started," Tyler informed. "Alright."

They began. Jared and Jonah continuously held their levers in a certain position. Tyler pulled his lever to one side, realizing the dome spun into a daytime sky and remained in that position-that was until he'd pull the lever back. Just when midday was to occur-when the sun had halfway revolved around the room-Tyler pulled the lever back, and the dome spun yet again to a nighttime sky. Jared and Jonah ceased to hold their levers in place just when the sun and moon had come to overlap eachother again.

The three of them waited for something to happen, but after a while of idleness, they realized nothing was happening.

"Great; you got it wrong," Jared sighed.

"No. No, it can't be wrong," Tyler dismissed. "Maybe I should do some more research. Find out what this contraption really means."

"And realize how wrong you were," Jared added.

The next morning, William hadn't shown up to breakfast. Rachel became worried but didn't address it, but Niamh could tell by the look on her face that she was curious.

"FYI, William has gone off to school early," Niamh explained.

"Oh..." Rachel trailed. "Like I care anyway."

"It'd be nice if you still talked to him," Lucille advised, understanding the situation. "Just...closure for him."

Rachel didn't respond. Instead she stood from the table, grabbed her bag, and pulled Tyler along with her.

"I could do without the man-handling," Tyler said as he shook free of Rachel's grasp. They headed out of Anubis house and toward the school together.

"I know this is probably miserable for you," Rachel began, "pretending to be my boyfriend and all."

"We'll I wouldn't say it's miserable," Tyler shrugged. "Just one friend looking out for another."

"I think, maybe I should just talk to him," Rachel admitted. "Explain the whole mix-up-"

"-no," Tyler interrupted. "I mean he obviously showed no interest in you-"

"-you don't think he seemed the slightest bit sad when I told him you were my boyfriend?"

Tyler didn't want Rachel to notice William's affection for her even though he suspected it himself. After all, he liked Rachel as well.

"Well he should've said something about it," Tyler suggested.

"I don't know. It's not much like William to-"

"-don't overthink it, okay?" Tyler took this opportunity to slip his hand into Rachel's. "Why don't we just focus on making him jealous...this is for you, yeah?"

Rachel nodded slowly but surely.

Later on during the school day, Sarah spotted Jared in the hall. He was at his locker, and Sarah came over, slamming it shut.

Jared let out a sigh before facing Sarah. "Can I help you?"

"So you and Lucille kissed, huh?"

Jared pulled Sarah along to a place less populated. "Where did you hear that?"

"Lucille told me. And now that I think about it, you two would be cute together."

"We're complete opposites."

"Yeah, and opposites attract," Sarah argued. "So...how about asking her out on a date?"

"How about no?"

"How about why not?" she asked, mimicking him.

"Because she'd never say yes," Jared replied sooner than thinking about his answer. He realized he just possibly admitted to having interest in Lucille. "If you'd excuse me-"

Jared turned away and left Sarah, but she still shouted cheerfully down the hall, "Leave that to me!"

Mr. Rainier had come to the school during the school day to see Mr. Owen in his office. Mr. Owen had called him to meet, and so he attended and slipped inside while the students were in their classes.

"When I had notified the parents of the upcoming parents' day," Mr. Owen began, "I recognized important names from previous school record. One year, a former principal made the note of the former Chosen One and Osirion."

"They attended here?"

"Eddie Sweet and Nina Rutter are the names. And they're children are in your house."

Mr. Rainier thought a moment about the surnames. Then he came to the sudden realization. "Lucille and Sarah."

"Meaning they may have knowledge of the house, and maybe the Chosen One and Osirion."

"That boy, William Lewis, also has knowledge of the house. His parents likely attended at the same time as Mr. Sweet and Ms. Rutter. And in parents' day they'll all be coming back...You don't think they'll suspect us, do you?"

"We'll keep watchful eyes on them when the day comes. In the meantime, you watch those children."

"Yes, sir."
