Ah, the first day of Kindergarten. Brendon and Ryan were both itching to see each other again. They never got to play outside of preschool, and when they both suddenly stopped going, they could only hope to go back to school.

And just to their advantage, they had the same teacher. Her name was Mrs. Tanya, and she was just as nice as Ms. Bell. They had the same carpet that was divided into colored squares. Brendon had decided he liked the color green, so he sat down at a green square when recess was over. He couldn't find Ryan at recess, so he had already decided this was going to be the worst year of his life.

A woman rushes in with her son in hand. "I'm so sorry, I was running late." She apologizes. When Brendon looks over and sees the familiar boy, his face lights up.

"Ryan!" He yells across the room.

"Hi Brendon!" He yells back. He lets go of his mom's hand and runs over to a blue square next to Brendon. They both smile at each other when they realize they aren't alone.

Kindergarten is different from preschool. They had homework like the big kids. They had to write in a journal they made themselves with construction paper. It was easy to know that none of these journals were readable in the beginning. That's what their homework was for. It had big letters on dotted lines that they had to trace.

There was also a stuffed bear that a kid got to bring home each week. His name was Benny. Benny would stay at the kid's house all week and while they stayed, the kid had to write about what they did with Benny and draw a picture. Brendon and Ryan were both so excited to finally bring him home.

"Hey Ryan, I'm bringing home Benny today!" Brendon exclaimed excitedly at recess.

"I didn't get him yet!" Ryan pouts.

"Maybe you can get him next time! You can play with Benny with me." Brendon cheers him up. Ryan nods.

"And we can teach him how to build a truck!" Brendon smiles widely.

It felt like forever until it was finally the day Ryan and Brendon had been waiting for. Their first play date.

They both prepared. Ryan dressed in his nicest play clothes and so did Brendon. Brendon pulled out all of his toys into the middle of the room, which made his mom mad, but she got over it.

Ryan's mom dropped him off at Brendon's house, which Ryan thought was huge.

"Hi Brendon!" Ryan waves at Brendon, who's behind his mother who opened the door to welcome them. Brendon motions his hand Ryan for him to follow him up to his room.  Ryan runs past Brendon's mom and follows him upstairs to see toy heaven.

"You have a lot of toys!" Ryan says with excitement.

"Look! We don't have to make the trucks!" Brendon holds up two toy trucks and hands one to Ryan. Ryan studies the truck in his hand with awe. It was dark blue with light blue flames running on the sides.

"Watch!" Brendon sets his truck on the ground, pulls it back and lets it drive uncontrollably into the wall. Ryan laughs and repeats what Brendon did.

They go into the hallway to race their trucks. Just before they began to wind their trucks back, Brendon stops.

"Wait! One second." He holds up a finger to Ryan and runs back into his room. He comes out with Benny stuffed under his arm.

"He can race with us!" He sets him down on the carpet next to Ryan and sits back down.

They play in Brendon's room for what didn't feel like very long to them.

"Ryan, your mom is here to pick you up." Brendon's mom says after she walks into the room. Brendon and Ryan both whine for just a little longer, pretty please with a cherry on top.

"You can play at school again. Maybe you can have another play date next weekend."

"Do you pinky promise?" Brendon says as he sticks out his pinky. His mom kneels down to his level and wraps her pinky around his.

"Promise. Now come on, your mom is waiting." She gestures to Ryan. The two boys slump down the stairs to the door.

"Bye Ryan." Brendon says sadly.

"Bye." Ryan waves and walks through the doorway to his mom.

-A/N: just so ya know this is gonna be platonic for a quite a few chapters. obviously. it gets more fluffy into the high school chapters. it seems like this story might be dragging out a little too long but I didn't want to do those annoying long time skips.
