I tapped my pencil on my notebook as I read over the notes. I took the last sip of coffee I had and sighed. It was almost 11pm and the cafe I was at was closing. I lifted my head for the first time in a long time and looked around at the empty room, then my eyes landed on the pretty girl wiping the counter down. I rubbed my eyes and packed my things. I still feel like I need to study more, so I needed more energy. I went up to the girl and quietly got her attention. "Excuse me? (Y/n), right?" I asked, looking at her name tag even though I already know her name. She looked up, a bit surprised. "Yes?" "Can I get another coffee to go?" She gave me small smile. "Are you sure? It's pretty late," She said. I chuckled. "Yeah, but I still need to study," She gave me a look. "Really? You've been in here studying all day today, yesterday and the day before, and you still don't know your notes?" She laughed. "You must be paying close attention to me to realize I've been here on multiple occasions," I teased. Her face turned red. "N-No! I just, I'm a good observer. Not that I was observing you! I just pay attention to things. And I've just been noticing you here a lot, " She mumbled. I smiled at her. "Anyways, can I get that coffee?" "You still want coffee? You're gonna be up all night then you won't even have the energy tomorrow to take your test," She crossed her arms. "How did you know my test was tomorrow?" I smirked and tilted my head. Her eyes widened. "Huh? I-I don't know. Lucky guess," She played with her fingers. "But seriously, you should be getting sleep if anything," She said, looking down. "Me? How about you? You're working the night shift. Pretty girls need their beauty sleep," "Are you saying I'll be ugly if I don't?" I laughed. "Not at all. I'm just saying we don't want our pretty girl to have bags under her eyes, now do we?" A blush crept on her face. Amused by her reaction, I leaned on the counter. "I'll tell you what, I'll take a reign check on the coffee and you should take your own advice and get some sleep too. Okay?" She nodded slowly. "Goodnight," I said. "Goodnight," She mumbled. I walked out of the cafe into the dark, deserted streets and waited around the corner. I looked through the windows and watched as (y/n) hung up her apron and turned the lights off. As she walked out and locked the door, she started walking back to her dorm. She goes to the same university I do and I see her around a lot, but I only ever talk to her when we're at the cafe. I stay in the dorm hall across from hers, and late at night, I always walk behind her without her knowing to make sure she's safe. Is that creepy? I keep a distance so she doesn't know I'm there. I don't know why I don't just walk with her. She just looks so cute when she walks. She looks down at her feet and walks in a straight line, swings her legs out to the side, hops over cracks, I just like watching her from a distance. Again, is that creepy? I smiled to myself as I watched her walk ahead of me. Further down the sidewalk I saw a suspicious person leaning against a building. I narrowed my eyes to get a better look. (Y/n), lost in oblivion, didn't realize when he started following her as she passed him. "Hey," He said. She jumped and turned around. "H-Hi," She said in a small voice. "Where are you going?" "Home. Now if you I'll excuse me," He grabbed her wrist. "What's a pretty thing like you doing out here all alone?" He asked. She looked scared and I jumped in. "She's not alone. Now back off," I said in a stern voice. "Joshua," She whispered. I gently pulled her behind me and glared at the guy. "Whoa, chill man. I was just trying to see if the lovely lady needed some assistance on her way home," "I got it covered, thanks," I said. "And who are you?" "Her boyfriend, now leave her alone," The guy waved his hands. "Whatever man," Then he walked the other direction. "Thanks," (Y/n) mumbled. I turned and looked at her. "No problem. Are you okay?" I asked. "A-A bit shaken up I guess. But what are you doing here? I thought you left," She asked in a small voice. Caught off guard, I had to make something up. "Oh, I went the wrong way and then turned around," I said. "Oh," Was her response. "Well, can you walk with me the rest of the way?" She asked, looking down. I smiled. "Of course," We walked in silence for a few minutes until I realized something. "You said my name earlier. How do you know it? I don't remember ever telling you," I tilted my head down and looked at her. She blushed. "Oh, I think I heard someone on campus say it," She replied. I grinned. "So we do go to the same university," I said, acting like I didn't know. "Yeah, I see you around a lot. We actually have the philosophy lecture together. That's how I know the test is tomorrow because I have it too," She said. "I know." I said, trying to hide my smile. She looked up at me. "You do? Then why would you ask me how I knew the test was tomorrow?" "I was just messing with you," I said. "Oh, that's not nice. You made it seem like I was stalking you," She pouted. I smiled and sighed as I casually put my arm around her. "I'm sorry. I just think your reactions are cute," I said. "Huh? O-Oh," She played with her fingers again. "Why do you always do that? Play with your fingers or look down when someone talks to you. Actually, it seems like you only do it to me. You never do it to other people," I said. "Who's paying close attention now?" She asked. I smiled and raiser my eyebrows. "Whoa, did not see that coming. Nice comeback," I said, making her laughed. "But yes, I guess I was paying attention to you," I said. "Why? I'm not that intersting," She said. "But you are. I don't mean that in a creepy way," I said quickly. "Anyways you never answered my question. Why do you alway act shy around me?" I asked. "I'm just a shy person," She mumbled. I stopped walking and turned her around to face me. Grabbing her shoulders, I leaned down to her level and looked her in the eyes. "I don't buy that." I said. "Do I, perhaps, make you feel shy?" Her face was bright red and she kept trying to look away. "Tell me the truth," She stomped her foot. "Why do you always do this to me?! You always give me these butterflies and I just wanna run away," She turned around and covered her face with both hands. I felt like I got the answer I wanted, so I walked around her, grabbed her hands and pulled them down. Her eyes were still closed. "(Y/n)," I said. "Do you like me?" She slowly opened her eyes and looked at our joint hands. "Is it okay if I say no?" "Why? So you can run away from your feelings?" "You're doing it again!" She pouted. I cupped her cheek and tilted her head up to look at me. "Tell me the truth," I said again. "Fine, yes," She said. I felt her face heat up, as if it wasn't already, and I smiled. "J-Joshua, can you stop looking at me like that?" She asked. I laughed. "No, you're gonna have to get used to it," "Why would I need to so that?" She asked quietly. "Because I like you too, and I want to take you out," "Take me out, you mean like with a baseball bat, or-" I laughed at her silliness and she laughed along. "No, I mean like to dinner. Tomorrow," A grin lingered on her face. "Alright," A second later, a drop of rain landed on (y/n)'s cheek making her flinch and I wiped it away. "We better get going," I said. I grabbed her hand and started walking back to the dorm. A minuted later, it rained harder, not quite pouring buckets, but it was getting there. I took my jacket off and put it over the both of us as we jogged to get home faster. "Wait!" (Y/n) stopped and took a compacted umbrella our of her bag. "I forgot I had this," She opened it up and held it in between us. "Let me," I grabbed it from her and put my arm around her to pull her closer. "See? This is what couples do, this is what I want us to do all the time," I said. After we made it to her dorm, I gave her the umbrella back but she pushed it towards me. "No, it's still raining, use it. You can give it back tomorrow," She said. "I'm okay-" "Just take it," She said. "I'll see you tomorrow." She was about to go inside, but stopped and turned around. She unexpectedly kissed my cheek and looked at me. "Goodnight," She said. "G-Goodnight," I replied. Now it was my turn to blush.
