a long week had come to an end for michael. on a friday evening, he was walking to the library where he was going to pick up a book that was assigned to him for english class - the great gatsby.

the seventeen year old watched his feet as he walked, avoiding the cracks in the concrete. his black converse tapped quietly on the ground with every step he took as he was being light on his feet.

when he arrived at the library only a few blocks away from his home, he adjusted the maroon colored beanie on his head as he entered. he looked around for quite awhile before he finally spotted the book that he had been searching for.

an older lady, who was quite small with glasses, scanned the boys book. michael shyly smiled at her before leaving the bookstore.

michael was on his way home when he felt a hand grip tightly into his shoulder, causing him to nearly jump out of his skin. he could feel his eyes grow wide as he turned around.

"michael, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to scare you," the familiar blue eyes looked down into his, a wave of relief washing over him realizing who it was.

"it's okay," michael spoke quietly to his teacher, still flabbergasted about the fact that he thought he was just about to be kidnapped.

luke smiled at the brown haired boy and his rosy cheeks from the cold weather, "I was just in here and I saw you, so I thought I would come out and say hi."

michael rocked back and fourth of his feet, a tiny smile on his cracked lips as he looked at the place his teacher was directing to which was a small bakery. the seventeen year old began to show his his extra shy side, not knowing what to say. it was strange seeing his teacher outside of school in more casual attire. he didn't look so much like his teacher anymore.

"is that the book that i assigned you?" luke broke the silence between the two, pointing down to the object michael was holding in his delicate hands.

"i just picked it up from the library," michael hadn't realized that he momentarily was in his own little world as he responded.

a gust of wind blew past the two, causing them to both pull their jackets closer to their bodies. other than the wind, it was quite a nice day. sure it was a tad cold, but it was bearable for a good while.

"why don't you come inside and warm up? it's cold out here," luke offers.

michael had a mental debate with himself. he didn't think it was a great idea, since he should be getting home before it gets dark out, but the thought of being warm appealed him, "sure, that sounds nice right now."

luke, being the gentleman he is, opened the door for the younger boy and led michael over to a table where another boy was sitting that michael has never seen before. he scrunched his eyebrows together, holding his book against his chest.

"michael, this is my friend, calum. calum, this is a student of mine, michael," luke introduced the two as he directed for michael to take a seat.

"hey, it's nice to meet you," calum spoke up first, seeing as he was the most outspoken one at the table.

"michael is going to sit with us for a little while, so try to be on your best behavior, " luke instructed in a jokingly manner.

calum huffed, "yeah okay, mr. hemmings."

luke ignored the comment, directing his attention back to michael. he could tell the boy was uncomfortable, or maybe luke was just too worried about how michael felt right now and he was just assuming things.

"are you going to be okay with reading that book?" luke remembered michael telling him that he wasn't the best at reading. he always cared about his students more than most teachers did. he always wanted to help them as much as he could.

"i should be fine," michael assured.

luke, once again, smiled softly. they sat there for not much longer, since calum had to be somewhere. michael followed luke out of the bakery, and awkwardly stool there while calum and luke said their goodbyes.

"would you like a ride home?" luke offers, seeing as it would be rude to let michael walk alone.

michael scans his eyes around the streets. the street lights were turned on as the sun made its way down, "i'm okay with walking."

"okay," in a strange, but flattering way, there was some kind of connection between the two. not in a couple kind of way, but in a way where they felt comfortable to be around each other. michael was only just realizing through these past few days how much of a good listener his teacher was, which is something he needed. someone to listen to him, "have a nice weekend."

"you too, mr.hemmings."
