february (year 6)
it was the first day at his new primary school, and josh was nervous. people surrounded him. he felt so small compared to the other sixth graders. josh didn't know what to expect, he left his best friend marcus at his old school. he knew nobody.

the nervous boy hopped out of the car, muttering a quick goodbye to his mother. he looked at the massive school. it was so much bigger than his old school, hopefully he wouldn't get lost. he headed into the school, carrying his backpack.

he entered the school, his heart pounding. he stared in awe at the huge amount of kids inside. some were chatting, chasing each other, laughing and getting ready for another term.

josh's thoughts were interrupted when he suddenly felt somebody shove him from behind. "get out of my way loser!" josh turned around swiftly.

a tall, scowling, scary looking boy towered over josh. his arms were crossed and his brows were furrowed together. he looked absolutely terrifying. josh's eyes widened and he backed away from the large boy.

"what, are you scared of me?" the angry boy scoffed. a small crowd had surrounded the two boys, whispering to each other nervously. it made josh's heart pound in his chest. his breath ragged. josh looked at the unknown faces, hoping that somebody would step up and defend him. "you're such a nerd. you have no friends. get a life."

josh felt the tears welling up in his eyes. he didn't want to cry - especially on his first day. he knew that they would all target him then, and that would be the worst thing that could happen. but why would this boy treat him this way? josh didn't even know the kid.

a tear slipped out of his eyes and fell down his face. josh moved his face away from the sight of the bully. but obviously trying to hide the tears didn't work. "ooooh, the little wuss is crying now," was spat from the person towering over josh.

a small, lanky, brown-haired boy wearing a skeleton hoodie burst through the crowd of people surrounding josh and the bully. "shut up jacob! why are you such an idiot? stop being so mean, you don't even know this kid!" josh felt like a huge weight had been lifted off his chest; finally someone had stood up to this bully - jacob.

jacob groaned, rolling his eyes."you're so annoying! whatever, i'm leaving." the crowd that was crowded around dispersed as there was no more drama to watch. josh left quickly, hiding his face. he didn't want to be late - especially on his first day. nerves bubbled up inside of josh. he hoped the rest of the school weren't like jacob.

the boy who defended josh stopped him in his tracks. "are you sure you're okay? i'm tyler by the way."

josh nodded in response. "yeah i guess so. i'm josh."

"i can show you to your class if you want?"

"yeah, thanks." josh smiled for the first time at this new school. they headed off to class together, carrying their school backpacks on their shoulders.
