--PROLOGUE--
The device hissed as the compartment s clunked together; a loud bang and engine whirring as it jolted into life.
The scientist calmly picked up a green substance in a testube with a pair of tongs, trying not to drop it. His hands shook as he attempted to steady himself.
A sudden slip allowed a small drop of the substance to make contact with his skin; where it touched, a small patch of auburn fur grew.
The scientist - undeterred by his spillage - placed the substance in his machine and sighed with relief.
He stood in the radiation shelter and the machine started up but the sudden sounding of the alarm heralded disaster. The machine suddenly blasted a jet of pure radiation out.
Meanwhile, above ground, the town slept.
