'"Run girl," A menisingly evil voice cackled. "Run!"
I turned on my heels and sped down a fungle infested, dark hallway, desperately searching for a door. THen right in front of me materialized the faces of my enemies from a mist, Shepard, Makarov, and Silvia. I clenched my fist and lundged at them, only to pass right through and hit the floor behind them. They turned and a cage dropped on me as more voices droned around me, "You're fault! You're fault! You're fault!" "Call me when you gain some sanity!" "Call me when you know I'm right!" I could see it all happen again, that dreded arguement, and watch SOap stomp out all over again. I grabbed my ears and screamed a silent scream, just no noise excaped my lips. "You're crazy, Scarab! ou've lost it! Take her to an asylum. Tell the driver it's direct orders from General Shepard."
I bashed against the bone cage bars and finally was able to scream, "Get outta my head!"
But they didn't, the voice kept droning, they only got louder. I banged against the bars again, rattling them and screaming. Someone kill me before I kill myself!
THen they all stopped, and out of the mist came three other faces. All horrifingly too similiar it made me cry. My wn dad and brother, and that girl whom died at gymnastics. But their eyes rolled back in their sockets, and skin so deathly pale. "Why didn't you stop me," My brother hissed.
"I tried!" I snapped back. "I tried to stop you, but you wouldn't listen!"
"Why did you kill me?" THat girl intoned.
"I didn't mean too!" I shouted at her. "I didn't mean to fall on you and snap your neck! It was an actident!"
"Why don't you listen to my advise?" My own father said. Now I was hurt. My brother used to say a lot of bullshite, and that girl was a diva. But my dad never told me off never once did he say I was wrong, or that he hated me. "You are such an arogent girl!"
I had nothing to say, there was nothing I could say. THen the three vanished in the mist, but their voices joined the chorus over the others, "You're fault! Your fault! Your fault!"
Then a new voice, "Scarab! Scarab!" The mist and gloomy overgrown hallway faded away,' down to a calm flamish tinted light and a mellow living room. Leaving me on a couch with SOap hovering over me. "Scarab, snap outta it!"
I blinked in mostly surprise, one minute I was battling my insanity, now I was sitting on a couch in a small living room. "WHere am I?" I asked still tryign to piece everything together. And now the power surge of my headach broke through the numbness that started to retreat.
"My apartment." Soap said gently. "We've got you covered. And now Makarov's dead, we now only have to clear our names. You need to rest." He kissed my forehead and smiled. "You think you could do that for me?"
"Yeah," I sighed, now noting how weak and raspy my voice actually sounded. "Yeah I guess. Oh uh Soap?"
"Uh-huh?" He looked down at me kindly.
"Why were you yelling at me when you woke me up?" I questioned.
"'Cause when I tried to just tell you to get up you shouted at me to get outta your head. So I had to try and get you up somehow." He turned for a room when he looked back at me, "Me and the others are gonna have to explain what happened. You'll just have to stay here with Fador, Marchell, and Irina."
"Okay," I muttered as I sunk back down in teh blankets. When Soap left for a moment and then he and everyone filed out of his apartment. He looked back at the door and smiled, "And if Dr. MacMillian comes, just let him in." ANd he was gone.
I watched the small TV with the kids, half expecting to see a report on wanted criminals and prosumed dead people showing up town hall to clear their names. But no, instead it was somedocumentry on the Beetles or something. Not that I have anyhing against them, just that I like other bands better. THen there was a knock on the door, Who is it?"
A fancy accented voice said, "Marila Selener from channel fourteen news." Channel 14, I was on Channel 21. I switched the channel to see the woman on the screen, a red head with perky blue eyes. Although very annoying by appearence, nothing dangerous as far as I could tell.
"Why are you here?" I questioned.
"TO interview a Ms. Macey." She said straightly, but I could still sense her tone edged with pep and perk. Ughh.
Not being the easiest to fool, and my paranoia, I didn't stand, "About what?"
"About General Shepard's betrayal. Your former Captain explained what happened, but we want everyone's sid of the story." Marila explained. "If you'd please open the door, you could answer so many questions of ours."
I sighed and went to the door, and of course there she was, a huge, very distrubing, smile on her preppy cheerleader looking face. Almost like someone stapled the corners of her mouth in those two spots. And behind her was a camera man and everyone. We all went inside Soap's ever filling apartment, me taking a seat on the couch. And so the questions started, "So you all were in the Task FOrce?"
"Well not all of us. Of course the kids over there aren'tbut Nikolai, Kamarov and Gonzalo weren't ether. THe rest of us were."
"So only two girls in the Task FOrce," I can see some mistivious glint in her eyes. "Does that lead to any relationships?"
How do I put this lightly? "Sure, a brother sister kind of thing. We look out for each other."
I can detect a hint a cool stare from Ghost, like he... Oh god! I'm gonna kill Heatstroke!
"No I mean a love relaionship kind of thing."
I looked to Soap and he nodded, "a little, but I'm not giving names!"
"Great, now could you tell us your side of the story." SHe asked.
So I began, just how do I? A moment later I then found the words. "I sat in a bar with my feet on the table, a glass of beer in my hand." And then began to tell the whole story. Followed by a million questions. "Suddenly someone grabbed me and pulled me into an alley as they put a hand over my mouth to avoid me screaming for help. I tried to break free, struggling and trying to pull my limbs out, but then the person whispered in a panic, 'Scarab, calm down!'"
"Oh my, who was it?"
"That voice... I knew that voice too well, I stopped trying to break free and let them turn me around to reviel this person's face. It was Roach." I told them.
"So these are you're actual thoughts on this?" She asked.
"Yeah pretty much." I shrugged.
"Please continue." She tells me.
***
"Shepard grumbled something no could heard but myself, 'And blows that chance of getting rid of you.'" I could hear those words play though my mind.
-FLASH-
I stared wide eyed at him and was try to repeat the words in my head, making sure I hear what I did. My heart raced as I thought for a moment, "You-You're a traidor!"
Shepard raised his hands defencivly, "Okay now I'm not! What the fuck are you talking about?"
"I heard you!" I snapped. "You said 'and blows that chance of getting rid of you'!"
"It's been a long month," Shepard sighed shaking his head. "And sometimes all that stress can build up. If you need to take some time off then that's fine but_"
"But nothing!" I yelled. "I heard what I heard! And I know you said it!" I glared at him then looked at the faces of my squad members, they just stared in shock. Soap's face was the most agrivating, he didn't know who to believe.
He stepped up and lightly put a hand on my shoulder, "Scarab, it has been a tough time for everyone. And maybe it's best if you do just relax for a bit_"
"But I know I heard him say it!" I shouted furiously. "He's plotting against us all!"
"Get her out of here," Shepard told Meat and Royce soildly. "Make sure that she gets some help."
Both Meat and Royce grabs my arms and started to lead me out, I wanted to kill that man, I whipped around and jumped at him. But before I could do any damage Royce pried me off and he and Meat pulled me out.
-FLASH-
"Oh my god." The report exclaimed when she heard it. "What happened next? I need to know." I could sense the needyness in her voice.
"I fell asleep sobbing, and was soon woken up by someone nudging me. So I quickly turned aorund and socked them in the face, thinking it was a theripist." I went on.
-FLASH-
"OH my god! I'm so sorry! I thought you were one of the theripists!"
Soap rubbed his jaw and sighed, "It's alright. I guess I kind of diserve it. I'm sorry you got dragged into here."
As if I could believe that, "Yah sure you are," I hissed before turning away with crossed arms. "If you were then you would have said something when Shepard told Meat and Royce to bring me here."
"What was I supost to say," Soap agrued. "'Oh Scarab must be telling the truth let's believe her'? You have to admit that it sounds stupid!"
"Then what do you know," I yelled hysterically. "If you cared then you would have stopped Meat and Royce!"
"I do care," Soap snapped. "If I didn't then I wouldn't have come! I wouldn't have even tried to contact somehow! I guess I should have talked them out of it but I'm sorry!"
"Oh you don't do anything to prevent me from getting in here, don't believe me with actual facts, but atleast you're sorry!" I screamed angerily.
"You know what," Soap told me fermly. "Forget it! I'm leaving! Call me when you've got some sense back!"
"Call me when you realize I was right!" I shouted as he left the door and it closed behind him. I screamed and punched the floor, why does the world hate me?
-FLASH-
Soap sunk back a little, but the newreporter was intreged by this. "Please, please go on."
***
"I was near tears, the sad part was he was right. But I was willing to try. I got up and tripped away. Heart racing, adrenaline pumping, I felt like I could make it. Then I froze, in front of me was Shepard."
"Oh my," THe reporter was shocked. "THis is where he betrayed you?"
I nodded and went on...
-Flash-
"Ah I see you weren't killed by Makarov. Looks like I'm gonna have to finish you myself." He pulled out a pistol and took aim, "Say goodbye."
His finger coiled around the trigger and I knocked him over. Kicking the gun away. I the angery yelled, "You killed my friend! You betray me! And you try to kill me! You're such a bastard!"
"You were in my way," He told me as he pushed me off. "And I knew you would interfear!"
I hated him, he was such a bitch! And now he was going to kill me! I wasn't about to let that happen. I kicked him in the side and grabbed his arm and pressed my feet to srmpit and tried to dislocat the limb. Then he spun himself around and I skid across the dirt. I looked up and saw Shepard stand back up and approach me, the gun in his hand once more.
He stood over me and aimed for my chest, "Any last words?"
I muffled my whimpers and resorted to kicking his legs out from under him. Shepard landed on top of me and his full weight knocked down onto my stomach. I might as well vomit and choke on that, I would die anyways. But then something pulled Shepard off, of course it had to be Makarov. Shepard looked from him to me and Makarov hissed, "I thought you were going to finish it!"
"I was!" Shepard argued. "She knocked me over!"
"Well just get rid of her quick!" Makarov barked.
"I'm going to do it right now," Shepard told him and went back to aquire his gun. "Now this is where it ends." His fingers wrapped around the trigger and he pulled it. The sharp and intence pain hit me. He got my chest.
I let out a long a hissed breath and Makarov asked, "Shouldn't you shot her in the head to be sure?"
"No. It won't matter," Shepar informed. "She's in the middle of nowhere. Who's gonna find her? Just get your men back to Moscow to get the assualt ready. I'll send you one of my Rangers to get the plan started out."
Makarov turned and left while Shepard walked towards a helicopter. My vision blurry as I watched the sand being blown around and swept everywhere by the helicopter. It took off and out of sight, and I laid there in a pool of my own blood.
My hands shakily grabbed my cellphone and my numbing fingers dialed a number then put it on speaker before dropping it down next to me. A voice, a thick accent answered, "Hello?"
"Th-this is Scarab," I shivered in pain. "I need help... My coorordinates are..." My voice trailed off as I couldn't find the strength to finish my sentence.
"What? What's your location?" The voice asked now critically. "Scarab, what's your location!" Then I closed my eyes and drifted away...............
-Flash-
"This is a great story." THe reporter smiled.
"I came to on a bed, a fluffy one, almost like the kinds you see in magizeens. The covers were warm and soft, and the pillow was like a cloud. I looked around, the room was pale green and the floor was an oak wood. The was a giant glass slide door to the other side of the room and a balconey outside. I stood up feeling a wave of dizziness and nausia pelt me. But I still couldn't help going over to investigate. I opened the door and felt imidantly a cold breeze hit me, it was a beautiful mountain range in front of me, like in postcards. I couldn't help my jaw slag as I stared at the sceanery. I saw how high I was, it was only two stories but near a cliffside. Some flowers were in bloom, and it was just... gorgous." I found it so hard to discribe.
***
"I woke up early and got my self ready, I got some thick ass winter pants on along with a coat, gloves, boots, my beanie, mask, and Heatstrokes goggles loosy hung around my neck. I was use to all this dead weight, and to make things heavier I also had a vector, and sniper rifle on my back, my mini ozi in the holster on my leg, and the knives ready. So I head out for my perch over viewing the base. The surprising part about my still having the comm with me, was the fact it still worked! It was directly connected to everyone elses in the Task Force, and I wondered why they didn't cut the connection yet. Maybe they put it off. But the sad thing was I had to keep it off to avoid them hearing me, I could turn off the mic, and have the ear peice working."
"ANd they were clueless that you were listening in." She reminded.
"Pretty much." I chuckled.
***
"He hadn't looked away from me the moment he saw me. I kind of wondered if it was because I was only in a sports bra." I told them, noting the embarrassed look on GOnzalo's face.
"DO I sense a crush," THe report grinned even wider, don't ask how it's possible because I don't even know.
"What? No," I quickly rejected.
I could see a dissapointed look on Gonzalo's face now, was he really into me? Oh god! If he's in me...
"So there isn't anything going on between you two," The report doesn't change her facial expression but her voice shows disapointment.
***
"I got ready to shoot them again when something shoved me to the side and into the river. 'Scarab!' Soap and Gonzalo both exclaimed. There was more of the drug teens, one swinging a gun like it was a club, also known as the bastard who knocked me into teh water. But back on track here, the river was deep as hell. And if I could touch the ground it was just muck and I'd still sink. The water was raising up my body quickly, infact I was barely able to keep my shoulders over the surface. 'Guys a little help!' My lower legs were submerged in the muck, and still going down. I was tilting my head up to keep my face above the water. 'Hold on!' Soap told me as he turned to get me. But he was a little late, I was spitting out river water and fighting to get air. Then I was completely under, the water blurry and clouded I couldn't see jackshit. I looked up at the surface not extremely fall away, but it was excaping me fast. I could only flail my arms trying to reach it. No luck. I was running out of time, I needed to breath. I held it in for a few more moments then I gasped out, taking in water. Everything faded and went black."
"Wow, and what then happened?"
"Suddenly I was on the bank coughing and yacking up the mucky water. I couldn't see anything, one it was dark, and two everything was blurry. 'Scarab are you alright?' The voice, I could barely reconize it. I blinked trying to get a grip, and figures formed. Those figures gained detail, I could makeout Soap and Gonzalo looming over me. Both with looks of consern."
***
"I kicked through the snow in the woods, seething with anger, rage, hatred, all directed at that one person. I was only trying to asure him that it'd be alright, but instead I wind up with him tearing my head off! THen my thoughts were inturupted by the thumping sound of helicopter blades against the wind. I looked up to see that a little bird hovered nearby, a rope dropped and down slid four troops. I thought for a long moment on what to do, then ducked behind a tree. As they came closer, I could idenify that they were Russian. What's that tell you? I looked at them, all in ski masks and goggles, bulky winter artic chamofladge coats. Then one stopped and started to come my way, I hoped to god that he wouldn't look behind the tree and see me. But sadly he did, and I was tazed. Seriously, not fun. I was practically stunned on the ground, and one kicked my head, goodnight world!"
"Oh my, the Russians recaptured you?"
"Well yeah!" I say.
***
"I gritted my teeth and screamed out in pain. I saw that the guards had shot me in the lower back, and that went straight through. My hand gripped the bullet wound as I tried to pull my senses back in order. Everyone stared with eyes the size of freaking dinner plates. But I reached for the revolver again, kinda thinking how Shepard used the same gun. Then fired at Makarov. Killing him and putting a finally end to his retched life. I whipped around as guard opened fire, I could feel bullets graze my skin, hear them wizz by my ears, And I watched them fall to my retaliation. Then black."
"So you killed him." The report had lost her perky smile a bit ago.
"Yeah and after that I was brought by my squad here. Which brings us back to the present." I finished.
"THat was so fasinating. And there you have it, a complex conspericy. Now you know. Back to you Jim."
The TV went to a graying old man who just was jabbering about the story.
Malila turned back to us and said, "Thank you fr the scoop. You reall made my career." ANd she left.
