The first thing I noticed when I woke up was that Jake's bed smelled like him.
The second thing I noticed was that he wasn't in it.
I blinked groggily, still half-asleep, as I turned over in bed. His side was empty, the sheets slightly messy, like he had just gotten up not too long ago. I rubbed my eyes, sitting up.
Maybe he was in the bathroom? Or downstairs getting water?
Yawning, I flopped back onto the pillows and reached for my phone. My screen lit up with multiple missed calls and texts—from Jay.
I stared at the notifications for a second before locking my phone again. I wasn't ready to deal with him yet.
Instead, I just started scrolling mindlessly, waiting for Jake to come back.
Then, a soft creaking sound caught my attention.
I glanced up as his bedroom door opened just a crack. At first, I thought it was Jake. But then I heard the light tapping of paws on the floor, and a second later, a familiar white blur launched itself onto the bed.
I grinned. "Layla!"
Jake's dog wasted no time making herself comfortable, curling up right beside me as I scratched behind her ears. "Did you miss me?" I cooed, giggling when she buried her head against my stomach.
We stayed like that for a few minutes, just snuggling, until Jake finally returned.
He walked in holding a few plastic bags, his eyes immediately landing on me and Layla tangled up on his bed. I could see the faintest hint of a pout on his lips.
Before he could say anything, I nodded toward the bags. "What's that?"
Jake blinked, like he had almost forgotten, before stepping closer and dumping the contents onto the bed. "Your favorites."
I gasped as I took in the snacks, drinks, and even some instant ramen. "You went out to buy all of this?"
"Yeah." He scratched the back of his neck, suddenly looking shy. "I just... I wanted to do something for you. To say sorry. Again."
I reached for his hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze. "Jake, we're okay. You don't have to keep apologizing."
He let out a small breath before smiling. "I know. But I still wanted to."
My heart melted. I was about to say something else when Layla suddenly shifted, pressing herself further into me.
