By the time I got home, I was exhausted—mentally, emotionally, in every possible way.
The past few days had been a whirlwind. From heartbreak to confusion to finally piecing everything together, my mind was still trying to catch up. But there was one thing I knew for certain: I wasn't going to let Jay off the hook.
I walked through the door, shutting it behind me, and kicked off my shoes. Just as I was about to head upstairs, a voice stopped me.
"Sooah."
I froze mid-step.
Jay stood in the hallway, arms crossed, looking like he had been waiting for me. His face was unreadable, but his eyes—they gave him away. There was something in them. Guilt. Hesitation. Maybe even fear.
I slowly turned to face him. "What?"
He let out a breath, his jaw tightening. "We need to talk."
I scoffed. "Oh, now you want to talk? After everything?"
He didn't flinch, but I could tell my words stung. "Just listen, okay?"
"No." I took a step closer, my anger bubbling to the surface. "I don't want to listen, Jay. You don't get to decide when we talk. Not after what you did."
He clenched his fists at his sides. "I was trying to protect you."
I laughed bitterly. "Protect me from what? From Jake? From being happy? Because guess what, Jay? That's all you did—you took away my happiness."
His brows furrowed, his lips pressing into a thin line. "I didn't trust him."
"And you didn't trust me to make my own decisions," I shot back. "You went behind my back. You manipulated him, threatened him, and you didn't even stop to think about what that would do to me."
Jay opened his mouth, but I wasn't done.
"You knew I was happy. You knew how much he meant to me, and you still did this. And for what? Because you thought you knew better?" My voice cracked slightly, but I didn't care. "Jake told me, you know. He told me about his ex. About why he was scared. And it broke him, Jay. You broke him."
Jay flinched at that, his whole body stiffening.
"And the worst part?" I continued, shaking my head. "You let me believe he didn't care. You stood there and watched me fall apart over something you caused."
