I had been waiting for him to text me all day. After our last conversation, everything had been a little bit... tense. I couldn't deny the tension between us, but I couldn't bring myself to make the first move. After all, I wasn't the one who had pulled away.
It was late in the afternoon when my phone buzzed. The screen lit up with a simple message from Jake:
Jake: Meet me at the park at 6 PM. We need to talk.
I stared at the screen, trying to make sense of it. He wanted to talk? About what? And why couldn't he just text me what was on his mind?
I sighed, putting my phone down. I didn't know what he wanted, but I had a feeling this wasn't going to be one of those casual chats. And yet, something inside me urged me to go. Maybe it was that nagging feeling that I was about to confront something I had been avoiding for too long.
When 6 PM came around, I was already at the park, pacing in front of the benches near the fountain. The sun was just beginning to set, casting a warm golden hue over everything. The air was crisp with the promise of a cool evening.
I spotted him walking toward me from across the park, his dark hair messy in the wind, his hands shoved deep in his pockets. As usual, he looked effortlessly perfect, and I hated how much it made my stomach flip. He was confident in that way that made everyone gravitate toward him, but I wasn't just everyone. I was supposed to be different.
He came to a stop in front of me, his eyes flickering with something unreadable. "You came," he said, his voice sounding almost surprised.
I crossed my arms, keeping my distance. "Of course I did. You said we needed to talk."
He looked at me for a moment, as if trying to read me, and then let out a small chuckle. "Yeah. We do." His eyes softened slightly. "Sooah, I know things between us have been... complicated. And I know I've messed things up a few times, but I just need to say this—"
I looked up at him, my heart racing in my chest. "What?"
Jake took a deep breath, as if collecting his thoughts. His gaze never left mine, intense and unwavering. "I like you, Sooah. And I don't just mean in some casual way or because we're faking this relationship for the bet. I mean... I like you. I've liked you for a while now."
I froze, the words hitting me like a punch to the gut. I had heard those words from him before, but this time... it was different. There was something raw in the way he spoke, something so sincere that it made it impossible to look away.
