The morning of my departure arrived faster than I expected. It felt like I had blinked, and suddenly, the last few months had turned into my last few hours at home.
I stood in my bedroom, staring at the half-packed suitcases on my bed, trying to push down the lump rising in my throat. This was it. This was the moment I had been working toward for years. The full scholarship. The dream major. The fresh start.
Then why did it feel so terrifying?
A soft knock on my door broke my thoughts.
"Hey, you almost done in here?" Minji's voice was unusually soft as she peeked inside.
I turned to her with a weak smile. "Almost. Just trying to fit my entire life into these bags."
She stepped inside, plopping down on my bed. "That's what happens when you have a main character moment and move away for college."
I let out a small laugh, but we both knew we were just stalling.
Minji had been my rock these last few months. She'd been the one dragging me out of my room when I didn't want to move, forcing me to eat when I had no appetite, and making me laugh when I didn't think I could. And now, I was leaving her behind.
"You're gonna do amazing things, Sooah," she said, forcing a smile. "But I'm going to miss you like crazy."
I swallowed, forcing back the sudden rush of tears. "I'll miss you more. But you have to visit me, okay? No excuses."
"Obviously. You think you can get rid of me that easily?" Minji scoffed, flipping her hair dramatically before her expression softened. "But seriously, Soo. I'm really proud of you. And I know things have been... rough. But I hope this new start gives you everything you deserve."
The meaning behind her words sat heavily between us, unspoken but understood. Things had been rough—especially with Jake. And as much as I had tried to move on, his presence had still lingered in my life like an unfinished chapter.
I nodded. "Thank you, Minji. For everything."
"Don't get all sappy on me now, we still have a proper goodbye at the airport."
A loud, obnoxious voice suddenly interrupted us.
"Are we done with the heartfelt bestie moment? Because my turn's next."
Jay stood in my doorway, arms crossed, but there was no teasing smile on his face like there usually was. He looked... hesitant.
Minji gave me a quick hug before standing up. "I'll let you two talk. I'll be downstairs."
