Saturday came way too fast. I had spent the entire week trying to pretend like I wasn't counting down the days until my "date" with Jake.
In all honesty, I had hoped the universe would intervene, maybe throw some cosmic reason my way that would cancel out this ridiculous bet.
It didn't.
I stared at myself in the mirror, the school uniform I had spent the last two years trying to avoid wearing in a semi-casual setting now felt too much for a "fake date." It wasn't that I cared about the uniform.
It was just the whole idea of the situation. I was about to go on a date with Jake—Jake, the golden retriever with a side of overly confident charm—and pretend like I wasn't about to absolutely lose it.
I pulled at the collar of my shirt, feeling a bit like I was choking. God, this was awful.
"Hey, Sooah! Are you still alive in there?"
It was Minji. I had asked her to come over and help me "prepare" for the disaster. Her version of preparation was to watch me suffer and offer no real support.
I opened the door to see her leaning against the frame, an evil smile plastered on her face. "Ready to face the storm?"
"Storm? More like a tornado of regret," I muttered, shuffling back into my room.
Minji followed me in and sat on my bed, throwing herself dramatically onto the pile of pillows. "You know," she said, tapping her chin thoughtfully, "this could actually turn out to be kinda fun. Watching you try to act like you're into him while keeping your sanity? It's gonna be hilarious."
I shot her a look that could only be described as deadly. "I swear, if you laugh even once..."
"I'll try to hold it in," she said, already giggling. "You know, I think you should just relax. It's a date. And I know it's all fake, but you're going to have to look the part."
I sighed. "Do you think I'm actually going to be able to pull off pretending to like him? The guy who's been the bane of my existence for the last seventeen years?"
Minji shrugged. "Who knows? Maybe something will happen. Sometimes fake dating turns into real feelings. Have you ever seen a rom-com?"
"No." I crossed my arms. "That's what I'm terrified of."
The doorbell rang just as I was mentally preparing myself for the hell I was about to endure.
I stared at the door, feeling a wave of nausea roll over me.
