There were exactly three things I hated more than anything in the world:
- Waking up early. - Running into someone I know at the grocery store. - Sim Jaeyun.
And unfortunately for me, only one of those things actively made my life a living nightmare on a daily basis.
Now, I know what you're thinking. Sooah, "hate" is a strong word. Sooah, maybe you're being dramatic.
To that, I say: No, I am not.
Sim Jaeyun had spent the past seventeen years of my life personally making sure I suffered. Ever since we were kids, he had been everywhere—at my house, in my classes, at every family party. Why? Because the universe hated me.
Or, more specifically, because my older brother, Jay, had the absolute worst taste in friends.
It didn't help that Jake was the type of guy people were obsessed with. Girls at our school literally worshipped him, even though he had the personality of a cocky golden retriever with too much confidence. He was the star of the soccer team, had stupidly perfect hair, and somehow always managed to look effortlessly good in our boring school uniform.
Meanwhile, I was just... me.
A little too blunt. A little too stubborn. The kind of person who didn't like socializing unless it involved food.
I wasn't "the cool girl" or "the quiet mysterious girl" or any of the things Wattpad authors romanticized. I was just a girl who wanted to graduate high school without tweaking and losing her mind.
And Sim Jaeyun was not making that easy.
"Sooah, stop glaring at him, you look like you want to commit a crime."
Minji's voice snapped me out of my thoughts.
I turned to face my best friend, who was watching me with way too much amusement as we stood outside the school gym. Our friend group was supposed to meet here before the annual Senior Bet, but I had been too busy glaring at a certainsomeone across the hallway to focus on anything else.
"I'm not glaring," I said, even though I absolutely was.
Minji raised an eyebrow. "Right. And I suppose you're just admiring the view?"
I made a face. "Don't be disgusting."
Minji just giggled. "To be fair, Jake is nice to look at."
I turned to her with pure betrayal in my eyes. "You're supposed to be on my side."
"I am on your side," she said defensively. "I'm just saying, if he had a personality transplant, he wouldn't be the worst option."
I gagged dramatically. "I'd rather date a rock."
Minji sighed. "You're so dramatic."
I huffed and looked away, only for my gaze to involuntarily land on Jake again.
He was standing against the lockers, his black uniform jacket slung over his shoulder, tie loose around his neck, like some K-drama male lead. His hair was in that perfect messy state that made girls weak in the knees, and, as usual, he was flashing his signature cocky smile at some poor, unsuspecting girl.
I wanted to throw up.
"Ugh," I groaned. "Look at him. Flirting. Again."
Minji hummed in thought. "Well, at least he's consistent."
"Consistently annoying," I muttered.
Before Minji could say anything else, a loud clap rang through the hallway.
"Alright, listen up!"
I turned just as Jungwon, the self-proclaimed leader of our friend group, hopped onto one of the benches, grinning like an evil mastermind about to unveil his latest scheme.
It was time for the Senior Bet.
Now, let me explain.
Every year, our friend group came up with some ridiculous bet that two unlucky people had to participate in. The rules were simple—whoever backed out first had to do a humiliating dare chosen by the rest of the group.
The bets always started out as a joke, but they usually escalated into something insane.Last year, the bet had been a silent challenge, where two people weren't allowed to speak to anyone for an entire week. The year before that, it was a social media takeover, where one person had to let the group post anything on their account for 24 hours.
This year?
I had no idea what Jungwon had planned, but judging by his evil mastermind expression, it wasn't going to be good.
Minji nudged me. "I have a bad feeling about this."
I sighed. "I always have a bad feeling about this."
"And you're always right," she admitted.
Before I could reply, Jungwon clapped his hands again.
"Welcome to Senior Bet 2025!" he announced.
The reactions were mixed.
Some people groaned. Others cheered.
I just stood there, bracing myself for the worst.
Jungwon grinned. "This year's challenge is going to be a relationship test."
My stomach dropped.
No. No, no, no—
"The bet this year is..." He dragged out the suspense, smirking. "Two people in this group will have to fake date for one month."
I choked.
"A month?!" someone gasped.
"If they last the full thirty days without tapping out, they win," Jungwon continued. "If they break up, the loser has to do a humiliating dare chosen by the rest of us."
The reaction was immediate.
Laughter. Shocked gasps. Excited whispers. Meanwhile, I was internally dying.
Fake dating? FAKE DATING?!
I barely tolerated real dating, and now I had to pretend to be in love with some random person?
Minji turned to me with a wicked grin. "Oh my god. What if you get picked?"
I whipped my head toward her. "Don't even joke about that."
She giggled. "It would be hilarious."
Before I could strangle her, Jungwon held up a bowl filled with slips of paper.
"And now... time to pick the lucky couple," he announced.
I swallowed hard as the bowl made its way around the group, each person reaching in to grab a name.
I had the worst luck in the world.
And I had a sinking feeling that the universe was about to prove it.
