The kids

Our children will never know
What carrying a full suitcase is like
Because they won't have all of the trauma to carry

They will not grow up in a house
Where mistakes lead to rage
And hurt turns into longstanding misery

Our children will believe
Having peace in a household is normal
And love should be given freely, not earned

I want to give them what I never had
The patience and kindness of an attentive mother
The comfort and warmth of an available parent

I hope they never have to carry the burdens
children today carry
Because at the end of the day

We are just kids.
