I wake up the next morning and get ready.
It's our day off. I decide to pay a visit to my old neighborhood.
At Flames House
I walk in and see Amanda on the couch.
She smiles at me. "Hey, Flame."
I smile. "Hey, where is she?" Amanda gets off the couch and walks me to the hatch. I open it and crawl in.
Lucy turns. "Flame!" She hugs me tight. "What are you doing here?"
I smile. "I came to check on you. I saw Dad. He's ok." I spend a little time with Lucy and then say our goodbyes. I walk out of the hatch and close it pulling the rug back over. I walk out to the living room and sit down in a chair.
Amanda looks at me. "What are you doing here?"
I sigh. "I think she's in trouble. During stage two they get into our heads and unlock our fears. Lil duck keeps popping into mine."
Amanda sighs. "I'll move her somewhere else then."
I shake my head. "No just...stay put." I look at the time. "I have to go."
Amanda stands with me and hugs me tight. "Tell Chaga I said hi. Keep each other safe." I nod and leave.
As I am coming back to the house a few men stop me.
A man looks at me. "I need you to come with me." I start to walk past them not wanting to deal with their bullshit. They grab onto me and I start to fight them off.
A man comes over. "Enough!" I look up and see the new sergeant. "Are you alright?"
I pull on my clothes adjusting them. "Ya, I'm fine."
He nods. "Come with me." He leads me into a house and opens a beer setting it in front of me. He smiles. "Take a seat."
I hesitate but sit down. "Thank you."
Sarg sighs. "Why were you out and about? It's not safe you know."
I nod. "I was just visiting some friends. Making sure they had everything they needed is all."
He sighs. "This is war Flame. It's every man for themselves. Have you seen your father?"
I shake my head. "No."
He nods. "It's hard to let go. It's in our nature but you just have to. The one-child rule helps our society from becoming weak and famed. You would help me make sure that's happening wouldn't you?"
I shrug frowning. "How would I help you?"
He smiles. "Well, I heard you are one of the top people in your group Flame. I need to know that I can count on you to enforce the law even if it's been broken by someone close to you someone you care about."
I smile small. "Of course."
He nods. "Good. I'll have my car take you back to base."
Something was off about this guy. He sent shivers down my spine. I feel like this war isn't the one I thought we were fighting.
