The room was completely silent. Egon looked at me, his eyes brimming with eager anticipation. It was as if he was waiting for some kind of response from me. However, my mind was filled with a whirlwind of confusion.

What did he expect me to say or do? It was comforting to know that he saw me as a friend, although a big part of me had hoped for something more, but how could that possibly lead to me being poisoned? He was surrounded by other people who were much closer to him, if they wanted to hurt him they would have chosen someone else.

"Thank you for willing to be friends with me," I said, my voice tinged with uncertainty as I broke the silence.

Egon's brows shot up in surprise, his eyes widening slightly. 'Friends?' he echoed.

I nodded. "Yes, you said that I'm your mate, right?"

Egon's expression softened into a mixture of surprise and realization. "You... you don't understand what mates are," he said.

My brows furrowed in confusion. "Of course I do, it's just another word for friends."

Running his fingers through his hair, Egon muttered something under his breath, too low for me to catch. Right as I was about to question it, Egon began to speak again, this time with a louder voice.

"Mates are something much more profound than friends," Egon explained, his tone soft. "In my world, the term 'mate' signifies a connection much deeper that surpasses any other. While you can have many friends or family members, there's only one person who can be your mate."

There was a certain awe in his voice as if he was talking about something sacred, something he cherished. It was evident that this concept held immense significance to him.

"A mate is the most important person in your life," he continued. "Someone you're connected to for eternity. I think the alternative word you can use is soulmate."

Soulmate? A blush crept onto my cheeks, and my heart quickened in response to his words. Was he saying what I thought he was?

"I dreamt about having a mate for many years, though I started to believe it was impossible for me." His stare seemed distant as he spoke out his thoughts. His voice was still soft, but it gained an additional tone of sadness. It was clear that he let down his guard, showing his vulnerability.

"I wondered how it would feel, to see your mate for the first time. To hold her, to provide for her, to cherish her." Suddenly his gaze locked onto mine, his eyes revealing a flood of emotions. "But what I'm feeling now, in this moment, exceeds any expectation I ever had."

As he reached out to touch my face, the familiar surge of electricity passed between us. "You're absolutely perfect," he murmured, his voice tender.

I was speechless. No one had ever expressed such affection towards me before.

"When I first saw you," he proceeded, his voice carrying a sense of wonder, "It felt like I was dreaming. Your eyes completely captivated me. You had me under your spell. I couldn't believe that I had finally found my mate."

Listening to his words, I remembered feeling the same way about him. It had seemed absurd, to feel such a strong connection to someone I didn't even know. Back then, I was questioning my own sanity. But now I realize that it was destined to happen, that I was naturally drawn to him. That it was all part of a greater plan, something beyond my control.

I couldn't help but feel sad upon hearing this. Were our feelings for each other truly genuine or was it merely a result of some magical force?

Sensing my change in demeanour, Egon abruptly halted his explanation and regarded me with concern. "What's wrong? Have I been to forward?" he inquired, a hint of fear in his tone.
