Chapter 14

Mu, western contact line, September 31, 5:56 AM 1958

The infantry had positioned themselves in the attack lines in the various attack trenches and tunnels that went beyond the line of trenches, barbed wire and tank wrecks that the great war had created, Mu's engineering corps for all the years in which this fragile peace was in progress had created a mammoth line of trenches and tunnels with all the nations bordering Mu

And today this piece of the real network was put to the test, 25 thousand artillery pieces from 350 mm howitzers to 75 mm field guns were ready to fire by 6 o'clock.

The shock infantry that was supposed to open the way was ready to spring like a hungry beast as soon as the bombardment was over

The tanks will have to wait as it will take the engineers an hour to clear the gaps between the lines that had remained stationary for years

The fighters were already in the air and were waiting for the bombers to destroy the Leifor airfields

An officer was looking at his pocket watch for what seemed like an interminable hour but it was only 10 seconds, when the hands of the watch clicked to 6 he braced his voice and shouted, "For Mu, for the Republic, Fire!"

His men, who were only waiting for this order, went into action with an efficiency that could rival the volunteer troops but it is clear that even the conscripts were enlivened by the spirit of their homeland.

For four interminable minutes the entire border with Leifor was hit by a million artillery shells

The few units that had any trace of command were destroyed as Mu's shock infantry emerged from their hidden positions and began the attack on the few things that remained standing

Once the cleaning was finished, the engineers began their work to open the passages which they managed to finish in record time in just 40 minutes

So the tanks began their deep attack 20 minutes early and began to penetrate Leifor territory.

While this was happening on the ground, in the air there was a bloody air battle taking place

After the loss of Leiforia, Leifor's air force was put on maximum alert and in a few minutes managed to get 10 thousand planes into the air which were challenged by 8 thousand planes from Mu

The air battle may seem to have already been won by Leifor, especially if we continue that 2,000 of those planes were bombers

But thanks to the help of Gra Vralks Mu managed to produce its first thousand mixed-power airplane (a very interesting concept I recommend looking up FR Fireball for more context) and knowing that Leifor's planes were already inferior to Mu's normal planes we can understand what will happen when they meet the first instance of Jet power

To the uninformed person it may seem impossible that two nations that appear on the surface to have never met already have treaties and exchanges of technology between them.

But in truth there had been under-the-table contacts since Gra Vralks' conquest of the uncivilized regions to the west of the continent where Mu is located

Gra Vralks had a gigantic need for food and fuel before its new colonies became fruitful and so Mu created a fictitious base in the area and began massive support for Gra Vralks

Thanks to Mu's political system and the great power of the military, all this never came to the attention of the various governments and above all went under the radar of the HME

As well as payment for the life support that Mu had provided to Gra Vralks, the Gra Vralks government with the military's approval began to pass on a lot of information to build more modern machinery to Mu

But knowing that aviation was not yet ready for such a big change, a spogap solution was opted for, namely the new mixed-power plane called Buteo

Even though the air battle was already won, Leifor's air force was not destroyed without putting up a fight

Mu's losses were around 900 planes downed while Leifor's were around 3000

Leifor's remaining planes were forced to retreat into the country's interior as their airfields near the front often had a Mu tank parked on the runway

In 12 hours, Mu's army had already penetrated 20 km across most of the front

All this was thanks to the reforms of the armed forces of Mu which even before contacts with Gra Vralks already was in a period of modernization of all its branches similar to the modernization of the German army before the Second World War, but unlike them Mu had both the industrial and economic might to make these changes throughout the army

If previously the air force was made up of mostly old biplanes and a few obsolete monoplanes, now it was made up of monoplanes with the latest technologies and the first planes which, even if not completely, began to use the new jet engines donated by Gra Vralks given that those designed at home they are still too raw to be used

The army had gone from an army that relied on large infantry formations to carry out its offensives to now relying entirely on new tanks and new mechanized forces, although they did not abandon their thousands of artillery pieces in making the greater effort to open gaps therefore creating a doctrine similar to that of the Soviet Union, although with the total lack of a parachute force since they are not very sure that in a war against HME they can have air superiority

The navy was the only force almost untouched by these reforms as the majority of the naval force was of modern design and the old ships that remained were essential to keep its allies safe in areas where it was not possible to bring oil for the ships and therefore coal had to be used

While this was happening from Leiforia, Gra Vralks' troops had launched their own offensive but unlike Mu's forces, many of the soldiers involved in this operation were already veterans of similar operations and in just 6 hours they had already penetrated 40 km into the few defenses that Leifor's army had managed to prepare

It also helped the coordination between the air force, navy and ground forces that had been forged in their Second World War and was showing its effectiveness against the unprepared and demoralized forces against which it had been used

Sadr Base, 31 September 9:00 PM 1958

Admiral Raider was looking at the communiqué that had come to him via telegraph, and it read

"Leifor invasion begun, prepare capital ships and escorts for the Empire founding celebration held by Parpaldia every November 13th"

Raider was a little shocked, usually he had only been ordered to send some DD to the celebration for the foundation of the empire (National holiday held by Parpaldia every November 13th, when the foundation of his empire was proclaimed), but reading the beginning he understood that the situation could easily break out into a world war and having a fleet in the capital of one of the possible enemies certainly wouldn't hurt, but he also had another idea

The admiral stood up, picked up the phone and said to the telephone switchboard operator, "Please get me Captain Myrus."

Having done this, when Myrus answered the phone, Raider told him, "Can you bring the American diplomat Ogen Reid here because I might have an interesting proposal for him"
