The scene before the Sully's.

Start from the beginning

Neteyam froze, and Fe'ya felt the oxygen leave her lungs.

The avatar stepped forward again. "Well, the name's Lyle and I--" he removed a small knife from his belt, "Come with Style."

He lunged forward and Neteyam dodged to the side, sneaking behind Lyle to yank his queue back painfully. Lyle was more muscular, but Neteyam knew how to fight. He wrapped his arm around Lyle's throat and snatched the knife, before pressing the blade to the avatar's jugular. "You will not touch him," Neteyam growled, low in his throat, "or I will kill you."

Fe'ya saw Neteyam's hand shaking as he clutched the knife, three fingers curled tightly around the handle. Briefly, Neteyam lifted his head to the sky and closed his eyes, trembling once more. She watched him mouth a couple words before he took the knife and thrusted it into Lyle's stomach.

Fe'ya felt a whimper escape her throat. She backed closer to the wall, huddling against Kiri and Lo'ak, who were both panting in fear.

Lyle screamed and crumbled to the floor with a loud thud. Neteyam pulled the knife out and came to our side, crouching in front of us, holding the weapon out before him. A loud, blaring alarm went off and before Fe'ya could react two more avatars burst into the room, pointing pistols at Neteyam.

"Put the knife down now!" one said, "And put your hands up!" she was a female with a mow hawk.

Neteyam raised his arms above his head, his fangs bared, and his eyes glued to the firearms. Fe'ya's heart panged with pity when she noticed his tail curling between his legs. He was vibrating with fear more than she was.

"Do not hurt them," he pleaded, "Please."

The two avatars share a look, then nod. "If you come with us, we're not going to hurt your siblings. But you can't lash out."

Fe'ya wasn't sure what she heard in their voices. Pity? It seemed unlikely for them to have such a feeling. But Neteyam obeyed their orders. With all her heart she didn't want him to, afraid for his life, but then she realized he was still clutching the knife.

The mowhawk lady grabbed Neteyam's queue once he came forward. Fe'ya waited for his reaction, but it didn't come until the two avatars lowered their guns. Once they did, Neteyam took the knife and stabbed her hand. She dropped her gun and shrieked, clutching her bleeding wrist. Neteyam snatched the other avatar's gun and without hesitation, fired it at the avatar's head.

The gunshot echoed off the walls. Then there was silence. The body of the avatar slumped to the ground, a gaping, bleeding hole through his cranium.

Neteyam pointed the gun at the woman. "Get out," he hissed, "I won't kill a woman unless I have to, so leave!"

She didn't need to hear it a second time. She raced out of the door and locked it behind her, Lyle crawling along with her.

Neteyam dropped the gun and stepped back, inhaling deeply. He looked at what he did--a puddle of blood pooling beneath the avatar. Lo'ak stared ahead, his eyes wide with shock. Kiri had tears rolling down her cheeks.

Neteyam leaned over and close his eyes. Fe'ya heard him take a deep, shaky breath in. Lo'ak finally spoke after a moment of him doing this. "Neteyam, are you okay?"

Neteyam nodded and wipes his eyes. "Yeah, yeah. I'm okay, bro. But you owe me one."

Lo'ak laughed. "Yeah, I do."

Neteyam lifted his head in fear as one more avatar came through the door. But this one simply avoided eye contact with Neteyam and drug the body away. Then, the door shut one last time with a click.

Tonowari lays out all of his weapons before him, arranging them neatly. "We will retrieve your kids in no less than three days," he says, "as chief, I will not let them stay for longer than four."

Ronal, placing her hand on her husband's shoulder, nods in agreement. "Your children are villagers here, Jake Sully. We will not let them rot in that place, and we will kill those demons."

Neytiri, standing in the moonlight of the chief's pod, looks thoughtful, as if she's proud of her newfound leaders. Tonowari and Ronal have called a meeting between the four of us. Since I know where the kids are, we now have everything we need to go get them back. I know they're in Bridgehead city, that's the only place Quaritch can keep them with enough security and weapons to keep us from rescuing them.

So, I doubt he'll be expecting us.

I hope.
