Awa'atlu gathering.

Start from the beginning

Outside, the entire village was setting up tropical decorations, cooking food, and all sorts of things. It seemed the entire clan had emerged from their homes and were all assisting in setting up for the gathering. Even the Metkiyina children were running around as they accompanied their parents or completed small jobs, but many of them were just playing in the water. Tuk scampered off to join them while the rest of the Sully family set off to find their own chores.

A young woman with a newborn baby in her arms approached Neteyam, her long curly hair woven into tight sections atop her scalp. "Will you hang this up across the top of the marui's?" she handed him a giant net that was adorned with flowers, shells, and coral.

He nodded and took the giant net in his arms. "Of course."

Feya, as usual, was hovering by his side. She fiddled with her beaded top, "What shall I help with?"

"C'mon. You can help me."

They went over to a particularly long row of marui homes that were hovering over the shallow bits of the ocean, and Neteyam gave Fey'atsi one end of the net, while he took the other and walked as far as the net would stretch. Once they'd done that, he reached up as tall as he was capable of reaching and draped his end of the net on a small peg that was sticking out of roof of the marui. "There," he grunted, "Sephora, do the same thing I did!"

She nodded and fulfilled the order with a little difficulty, but she did it. They both made their way down the row of marui's, hanging up each part of the net before they eventually came closer and their elbow's touched. Together, they pegged the last piece of netting to the roof.

Well, not together, but Feya watched intently as Neteyam stretched his body upward to finish the job.

However, Neteyam noticed that she wasn't just watching him, but she was staring at him, her eyes unmoving. When he returned to his normal posture, he checked her out right back. Then, she tore her gaze away and took a step back, "Uh, what should we do next?"

It took Neteyam a couple seconds longer to regain focus. But his tone and his words never gave away that he was distracted. "Let's go find Aonung and Tsireya and see what they need help with."

Neteyam, feeling a little bold, held out his hand. Maybe he did want Lo'ak to see that he was interested in Feya, and maybe he wanted her to know that too. To him, liking someone was never something to be ashamed of. Smiling, Feya took his hand, and they walked across the beach in search of their friends.

They found Neteyam's siblings partnered up with Aonung and Tsireya, the six of them hanging out in the shallow water. Including Roxto, so in total, the group of teenagers were made up of eight kids. None of them were, in fact, working.

When Neteyam approached with Feya's hand clasped in his, he saw Lo'ak and Spider visibly piping up, ready to make fun of him. But once Neteyam noticed Tsireya's forearm resting between his little brother's hands, he knew there was no way Lo'ak could tease him without getting it back. Neteyam made sure Lo'ak knew that by eyeing where Tsireya's hand was placed, and Lo'ak's ears went flat.

He crouched down next to Aonung, "I thought we were meant to be helping?"

Aonung held out his webbed hand for emphasis. "They could care less what we're doing right now. They're too busy talking and setting up."

"So... you are sitting here?" Neteyam asked, crinkling his eyebrows. Or, where there would've been eyebrows if he had any.

Aonung nodded, facing his Omaticayan counterpart. "Yes. Is there anything wrong with that?"
