40|Prepare for War

Start from the beginning

Maybe that's why I'm angry all the time. I don't know.

I grabbed my shirt and buttoned it up before throwing on my jacket.

I made sure to put my gun in my holster as well.

I then marched out the closet and my face softened when I saw her still fast asleep.

I walked up to the bed and kissed her on the forehead.

I lowered down my gaze to her plump lips but quickly looked away.

I can't. If we ever kiss, I'll lose it and I won't go easy on her.

I rushed out the door and Luca was already at his station.

"Take care of her," I said and he nodded.

I told him that everyday. I know he was tired of hearing the same thing but if I can't stand the thought of anything happening to her.

I stepped in the car and started my rounds.

The smaller outposts were first before I headed to the docks.

Everything seemed fine so I headed to the hardware store.

I stepped out the car and headed inside.

I was making my way to the back when these two guys stepped in my way.

"I'm sorry there, dude," he said and it took everything in me to stay calm.

I am the owner of this building. I cannot assault my customers.

What would Elianna think of me?

"How did you get inside? The store is not opened as yet. Come back at ten," I told him.

I stepped aside and started walking again.

"My buddy is the manger. He asked me to pick up a few things for him!" He shouted behind me and I ignored him.

I am not wasting my energy on this fool.

"Wait!" He shouted as he stepped in my way. "Do you know where the plumbing section is?"

"I don't know. I don't work here. Why don't you try asking someone who is wearing a uniform. They wear those for a reason," I said before starting to walk again.

"Dude!" He shouted but I continued walking.

The both of them ran up in front of me again.

I sighed. "What are you problems?"

"You're Enzo right?"

I slowly reached to my holster and placed my hand over my gun just in case.

"Who's asking?"

"I'm Baptiste and this is my best friend Paul."

"Good to know. Goodbye," I said as I started to walk again.

"I knew your mother," he said and I halted.

I turned around to him. "What did you just say?"

"I knew your mom," he repeated. "She used to sell my mama flowers when I was younger. She was a very nice woman."

I lowered my hold from my holster as I dropped my shoulders. "Really?"

"Yes, it was right in this location. Well, this was the only location but thanks to you, there are multiple outlets now," he complimented me. "Your mama used to always talk about you. She loved you very much."

My mother was the best. Never in my life have I ever met such a woman who was so caring to me.

She always protected me when my father wanted to show me the bad stuff.

I sometimes blamed her for the way I ended up.

If she would've allowed me to be exposed to how cold this world really is, maybe I wouldn't have shut down the way I did.

"How are things with you man? You look all grown up!" He asked and I raised my eyebrow.

Who the hell is this guy?

"Good," I said.

"And your wife, Elianna? How is she? Is she keeping safe?"

I paused. "Wait, how do you know my wife's name?"

"Uh, I saw it somewhere. I can't remember exactly," he said.

He's lying.

I grabbed my gun and pointed it at you. "Who are you?"

The two men raised their hands in surrender.

"Wow man, we are just Baptiste and Paul," the other man said.

I took my gun off of safety and placed my finger on the trigger.

The chatty one immediately pulled out his gun and pointed it to me.

I smiled.

"Baptiste, you have a gun!?" Paul shouted. "Put it down! This guy might shoot us!"

"Who sent you?" I asked and he smiled.

"He is coming for you," that Baptiste weirdo said with a smile.

Looks like it was one of Romano's boys.

I quickly grabbed Paul's neck and stood behind him as I held the gun to his head.

"Put down the gun and I'll let your friend live. Not you but your friend."

"Whatever you're planning against Romano, it's not going to work. He already killed your friends," he said.

"Shut up," I said as I moved the gun from his friend's head and shot him in the head.

"Baptiste!" Paul shouted as he tried to come out of my hold. "I'm going to call the police on you, you psycho!"

"I was going to let you live but I don't trust you too well," I said to him before putting the gun to his head and pulling the trigger.

I dropped him and wiped off all the residue from my face before dialling Seb's number.

"Yes, boss?" He answered formally.

"He knows," I said. "Prepare for war."
