Rowan heard her Dad laughing in his room as she sat on the couch, on her computer. She was logging into her bank account to check her savings to see if she had the $6000 she needed for her college classes. She felt good logging in. Due to her dad promising to put $1000 towards her schooling, she had only needed to save another $1000 in the past month or so in order for her to have enough.

She had felt good about it, as she had been smart with her spending. No buying new clothes, her toiletries were being used to the bone, and she hadn't eaten anything that wasn't at home.

So you could understand that her heart dropped when she checked her balance and saw that she was $400 short. She deflated as she read the number. She was so sure that she would have had the $1000 by now and she couldn't understand how she didn't.

She jumped as she heard her Dad's door open.

"Yeah, I'll ask her," she watched him say into his phone before he looked up at her.

"Hey Rowan would you—," he started before his brows came together with worry. "Kid, you okay?"

Rowan immediately straightened up and fixed her face. "Yeah," she told him before clearing her throat. "Yeah, I'm fine. What is it?"

Her Dad studied her face more for a few moments before he spoke again. "Aanya invited us over for dinner. Would you like to go?"

"Yeah, sounds cool," she responded, looking away from the searching eyes of her Dad.

"Alright, well start getting ready," he told her before slipping back into his room.

She let out a breath and closed her laptop. She was glad that she had fooled him. She didn't want to ask him for more money, as he had already given her a big amount. She knew that he'd give it to her in a second, but she knew that money like that wasn't something that they got easily. Her Dad paid for all of the bills and had volunteered to buy the groceries this month as she saved. She'd feel shitty asking him for more after he had done so much.

She picked up her phone and looked at the date on her lock screen.

April 28th. Three days away from May 1st. How in the hell was she going to be able to get $400 in three days?

She stood and walked to her room to get ready for the dinner, still thinking about her situation. She pulled on nice casual clothes and brushed her hair. She walked out of her room, a pair of sneakers in her hand, and was met with the sight of her Dad.

"Ready?" He asked her.

"Just about," Rowan said before walking over and grabbing her phone. "Now I'm ready."

After slipping on her sneakers, they walked downstairs and hopped in her Dad's truck, driving around ten minutes before they pulled up to a quiet neighborhood nestled in the middle of their city's downtown that had similar-looking condos lined up on both sides of the street. Her Dad pulled into an open spot in front of a condo near the end of the block and they hopped out of the car, walking up to the door on the left side of the house.

He knocked on the door and glanced at her.

"You're going to love her cooking," he told her as they waited for the door to open. "Honestly. Her food melts in your mouth."

Rowan smiled as she watched her dad talk about Aanya. It made her feel good to see that someone was able to make her Dad so happy just by talking about them.

She heard the unlocking of a door and turned just as Aanya opened it.

"Hello!" She greeted, looking at the two of them with warm eyes.
