The following two days in Ron and Violet's minds were mundane or without significant incident - unless you count Neville melting his sixth cauldron in Potions. Professor Snape seemed to obtain a new vindictive attitude over the summer holidays and detained Neville. Neville returned from it almost in a nervous state of collapse, having been made to disembowel a barrel full of horned toads.

"You know why Snape's in such a foul mood, don't you?" said Ron to Harry and Violet as they watched Hermione teaching Neville the Scouring Charm to remove the frog guts from his fingernails.

"Yeah," said Harry, looking up from his Divination homework. "Moody."

It's very well known now that Snape wanted the Defense Against the Dark Arts more than anything. People have even started rumoring that Snape would happily give up his firstborn child to have the post. But Dumbledore never seemed to allow it to happen, and thus Snape always showed great resentment towards those Dumbledore placed in the Defense position. It was evident in the third year, with Snape snubbing Lupin every chance he got. But now, it seemed whenever the quartet could catch Snape and Moody in the same area together; Snape somehow avoided Moody's magical eye.

"I reckon Snape's afraid of him," said Harry after a moment of thought. "You know?"
"Imagine if Moody turned Snape into a horned toad..." said Violet, grimacing at the frog guts still under Neville's fingernails. "and bounced him all around his dungeon.."

The Gryffindor fourth years were very anxiously and excitedly waiting for their first lesson with Moody, so much so that they arrived early on Thursday lunchtime and queued up in front of his classroom door before the bell had even rung. The only person missing was Hermione, Lucia Fawcett, who was now very common to see with Hermione was even here. However, Hermione ended up arriving just in time for the lesson.

"Been in the -"
"Library." Harry finished her sentence, grinning. "Come on; we need to get some good seats.

The four hurried in, grabbed four chairs in front of the teacher's desk, grabbed copies of The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection, and waited. It was hushed. Soon, they heard Moody's distinctive clunking footsteps down the corridor, and he entered the room. Moody looked frightening and strange as ever. They could barely see his clawed wooden foot from his robes.
