01. The Crime

I know what she's going to do. I know it in my bones. I know it in my blood. I know it even in my non-vital organs.

She's going to force herself on him in this abandoned parking lot. This place smells like moss and wet concrete — Brings out the criminal even in the fair maidens, I see.

Is she a fair maiden though? She's a maiden I know. That's for sure. Fair or not, time will tell. She's not really important here, however. I mean she kinda is. But she is not.

The to be victim is who I'm interested in.

Any other boy and I would've put my life at risk to protect his virtue. But he... I switch on my phone's silent mode before framing my shot.

I knew there was a reason my instinct guided me to upgrade my iPhone last month, even if that licked clean my pocket money saving. Or maybe I just wanted it. It's a well guided choice, either way.

The hi-tech light sensors built into my portal to countless kitten purring and puppy grooming videos pick up every detail there is, as if the image outcome would look like it was taken under many studio lightings.

What a wonderful era to spy on people.

But not everything can be left for the phone to accomplish. I've to do my part of being the human tripod as well. I lodge my left elbow on the nearby column for stability. I push my right foot against the curb to stay steady.

All of my muscles and bones are locked in the desired angles. Even my heart and lungs seem to have stopped moving. They know how important this is. This is perfect. Finally, I'm ready. Like I've never been ready before.

As if on cue, she wraps her bony arms with stark pointy fingernails around his neck and leans in.

With burst mode enabled, I tap the big round button on the screen. A string of pictures where the boy's and the girl's lips are connected will now forever live in my most treasured, and expensive, digital device. The photos are... 🤌😙

An evil grin smoothly spreads on my face like butter in summer. No. Not like butter in summer. Like an ice cube on a cast iron pan over an open flame. It's a sizzling, steaming smile.

In one determined shove the boy sends the girl in the red raunchy dress far from him. His hand gesture following that looks like he's warning her; Her pale face looks like she got the rejection of her life.

She turns tail and runs away with her long blonde hair fluttering behind, like a heartbroken heroine in the vintage movies. He wipes his contaminated lips and looks around. I hide behind the pillar.

When I look back, he's gone, too.

Now it's time for me to go home and backup my phone. I need to upload copies of my silver bullet against Raylan Shaw into multiple cloud services. God bless free server storage.

I won't forget to scatter some copies among the hard disks, too, of course. I won't print them out, though. Not yet. But these pictures need to be protected at all cost, for I have grand plans and great expectations for them.

I'm going to make Raylan pay and wish he'd never crossed me.

With a victorious smile still plastered on my small face I open my locker to switch books for the third period.

My skeletal shoulders can bear the weight of only so much knowledge in between the classes, so I change up the books in my bag regularly. For the sake of my shoulders. And world peace.

"Stop smiling like a creep, Ellie. You've been at it since morning," Rebecca Dinget says as she shakes her head beside me. Becca's dark curls dance around her dimpled face in agreement.

"What's the good news anyway?" Tessa Powel aka Tess asks me as she leans against the locker next to mine, her shoulder crushing her straight brown hair against the metal.

I don't answer her and simply close the locker and turn to the two unnecessarily tall girls.

As usual, they are dressed like they have a teenvogue photoshoot in the evening.

Becca in a pair of tight fitting leather pants of a pastel brown color that makes it look like she's not wearing any pants at all. It's matched with a bright pink t-shirt. A combination that would make me wanna throw up if I was wearing it, but she looks as natural as if she came out wearing that from her mom's womb.

And Tess is in a black miniskirt that can be sold in an undergarment section without any disputes, whatsoever. But paired with a sleeveless white top, that's our chic stunner right there.

Forever stylish, confident, sassy and caring, these two are my very own knights in designer armors in the cutthroat high school life at Heabrow.

But even my America's Next Top Model level friends couldn't always save me from Raylan's irritating existence. And I can't afford hired assassins either.

However, by a divine intervention, I need no knights in heels to slay the dragon anymore. Or put a price of gold coins on its head. I can now put a collar around it and make it breakdance to my tune.

"What did I say about the creepy smile? It's getting wider," Becca says.

I stop smiling. "Wait until lunch. I am going to deliver the best news of our high school life to you two," I say before looking around. I don't see the dragon and his entourage. It must be a practice day today. They are probably in the football field.

It's okay, I'll let him enjoy his final days as a free man. It's the least I can do for the things I've planned for his future.

I can't believe I'm this excited. Usually, hearing his name, in any context, makes me want to butt my head against a wall. But now, I can't wait to see that precious face again.
