36. इश्क़ मुझ को नहीं वहशत ही सही .. (with explanation)

This is a very popular ghazal of Mirza Ghalib. It was used both in the 1954 film, Mirza Ghalib and the 1988 TV series of the same name.
Bharat Bhusan played the role of Ghalib in the film and Naseeruddin Shah in the TV series.

इश्क़ मुझ को नहीं वहशत ही सही
मेरी वहशत तिरी शोहरत ही सही

[The beloved feels that the poet's love is not passion, but merely madness. He responds that even if that's true, at least she gets some advantage out of it. The advantage she gets out of it is 'fame', that she is so beautiful that her beauty has the power to drive men mad.]

क़त्अ कीजे न तअल्लुक़ हम से
कुछ नहीं है तो अदावत ही सही

[Why do you cut off the connection.
If there's no affection left, then at least show enmity towards us.
Meaning, that enmity is also a form of connection, and thus far better than the loss of all relationship.]

मेरे होने में है क्या रुस्वाई
ऐ वो मज्लिस नहीं ख़ल्वत ही सही

[If I meet with you in private, then in that what disgrace will there be for you meaning if the beloved finds it too disgraceful to invite the lover to her gathering, she could at least meet with him in private.]

हम भी दुश्मन तो नहीं हैं अपने
ग़ैर को तुझ से मोहब्बत ही सही

[I'm not my own enemy, that I would show love for you and keep on driving myself mad over you, since you've already accepted the other as your lover.]

अपनी हस्ती ही से हो जो कुछ हो
आगही गर नहीं ग़फ़लत ही सही

[To know one's own existence is mystical knowledge itself. If awareness is not attained through one's own existence, then it's better to attain heedlessness itself through one's own existence.
Meaning, even something inferior, if it's authentically one's own, is more desirable than something superior that is obtained from others.]

उम्र हर-चंद कि है बर्क़-ए-ख़िराम
दिल के ख़ूँ करने की फ़ुर्सत ही सही

[Although for us humans life is as brief as a lightning-flash, still there is at least leisure enough to turn the heart to blood (an idiomatic expression for worrying, fretting, grieving)]

हम कोई तर्क-ए-वफ़ा करते हैं
न सही इश्क़ मुसीबत ही सही

[We're always faithful-- if not indeed to passion, then to difficulty indeed. (Whether or not we can count on passion, we can always count on difficulty to be our constant companion and one whose company we never seek to escape).]

कुछ तो दे ऐ फ़लक-ए-ना-इंसाफ़
आह ओ फ़रियाद की रुख़्सत ही सही

[Give something, after all, oh unjust sky. Give me permission to sigh and lament as much as I wish, about your injustice. Meaning as I was deprived of a union with the beloved atleast give me at permission to complain about the injustice. ]

हम भी तस्लीम की ख़ू डालेंगे
बे-नियाज़ी तिरी आदत ही सही

[Gradually we too will adopt a habit of acceptance and contentment, when we understand that indifference has become a part of your habit.]

यार से छेड़ चली जाए 'असद'
गर नहीं वस्ल तो हसरत ही सही

[Keep on telling the beloved the longing of your heart. Let teasing and pestering continue. If there won't be a union with the beloved, atleast there will be longing/desire for that union.]

qata kije na talluq hum se
kuchh nahin hai to adawat hi sahi

mere hone mein hai kya ruswai
ai wo majlis nahin KHalwat hi sahi

hum bhi dushman to nahin hain apne
ghair ko tujh se mohabbat hi sahi

apni hasti hi se ho jo kuchh ho
aagahi gar nahin ghaflat hi sahi

umr har-chand ki hai barq-e-KHiram
dil ke KHun karne ki fursat hi sahi

hum koi tark-e-wafa karte hain
na sahi ishq musibat hi sahi

kuchh to de ai falak-e-na-insaf
aah o fariyaad ki ruKHsat hi sahi

hum bhi taslim ki KHu Dalenge
be-niyazi teri aadat hi sahi

yar se chheD chali jae 'asad'
gar nahin wasl to hasrat hi sahi
