Esther was driven mad by the death of her son Henrik she did everything, she could to bring him back almost ever attempt failed, but one attempt was successful it did but sadly the spell needed to be tied to something else another spell so she tied it to Niklaus's hybrid curse.
As long as that curse was still active Henrik would heal and age slowly but sadly the spell required him to be on The Other Side so he saw everything he's siblings did.
Until now Klaus broke the hybrid curse and thus Henrik was released from his eternal torment and he woke in a coffin that Esther put him in and he was freed.
