BELLA DIDN'T LIKE BEING AT SCHOOL. She didn't like the people in her year. They didn't understand her. They always tried to force her into conversations she hated, acting like she was a pet in a talent show and the first one to get her to talk will win a prize. She didn't like how the popular kids thought of quiet kids as less human and more animal, as if they existed for their pleasure and that was all.

"What's that?" Bella asked, peering over Will's shoulder to see what he was holding. Will tried to hide it from Bella's grasp but she had already seen it before he could scrunch it up. It was a newspaper article from Will coming back after everyone thought he was dead, the eyes crossed out and the words zombie boy written across it.

"N―nothing!" Will threw the scrunched ball back in his locker and slammed it shut but it was too late. Bella frowned as he looked around for the suspect. She had gotten some of these notes but they stopped when El humiliated Troy, the ones calling her freak child or alien girl. They were stupid names but she knew how much it could hurt when hearing it over and over.

"I used to get those. Wanna know what helps?" Will nodded, looking up at her eagerly for her answer. "If you keep your head high with a smile and it pretends that it doesn't affect you, they'll stop. Even if it's hurting you, don't let them show it hurts and they'll stop getting a kick out of it."
