ARABELLA GRAHAM was a normal teenager. That's what everybody thought. They all thought that she was an ordinary thirteen year old who lives with her mom, her uncle and a woman she considered to be an aunt. They thought that she was an intelligent girl who focused on her studies and didn't have time for anyone or anything else as they hardly saw her around the town. But, if they looked a little closer, they would have noticed how her mom and that 'aunt' were in love. They would notice how she spent most of her time with Will Byers and the rest of the gang in Mike Wheeler's basement. They'd notice how her grades had slipped a year back and haven't been caught up since then. They would notice how abnormal things happened around her and the people she cared about. 

    

HAWKINS WAS a small town with superficial people. Everyone was putting up an act. The person you walked past in the shops was pretending to not be broke, the parents waiting outside a takeaway with a baby in a pram were pretending to be in love, the car full of teens speeding past the highway was pretending to be happy. All of them were acting in some way. It was the only way for people to survive; to fake things until they made it. In a small town like Hawkins, putting on an act was necessary. 

  

ARABELLA WASN'T any different. She had been putting on acts her entire life to protect her family and her friends. She had been keeping her family life a secret from everyone so that her moms could live in peace. She kept her friends' lives secrets from anyone she saw so that she could protect them,namely Will and Eleven. Having been so used to these acts, Arabella found it easy to read people. She could figure out things that most people didn't have the patience to do. She could read people like a book, some which she enjoyed and some which she did not. The book of Max Mayfield―that was Arabella's favourite.
