TAPPING HER FOOT AGAINST THE BUS FLOOR, Max looked out the window with music blaring into her headphones. She hated taking the bus. The people were too loud and always throwing things around. Max had been hit by either a paper ball or a basketball one too many times. She would much rather skate there but her mom insisted on her taking the bus, claiming it was too far and too dangerous to skate. Max knew she meant well―at least she was guessing so, she hardly knew what her mom was thinking and feeling these days besides grief and self-pity―but it sucked. Lizzie, who had become somewhat of a maternal figure to Max in the last year, had offered to drive her there but Max denied. She didn't want to be more trouble for the woman than she already was.

The only thing that made the trip worth it was being able to listen to Bella's cassettes on the way. Technically speaking, it was Brian's which he had given to Bella and now it was in Max's possession. She had all of Bella's cassettes, Brian had dropped them off for Max to take and she had listened to all of them over and over. It may sound stupid but it helped her to still feel close to Bella even with it coming close to a year of her being missing. The album she had playing now was one she knew Bella loved. Aerosmith. By, of course, Aerosmith. It surprised Max when she first heard it, she never expected someone as soft as Bella to listen to this, but she shrugged saying Brian played it for her and she loved it.
