As soon as he heard Hitch's footsteps fade from hearing, Armin let out a breath of relief and relaxed into his seat.
"Well that was uncomfortable," he thought to himself as he pulled out his phone to check the time.
He saw that it was now 3:35pm, and also that he had a few messages.
Armin frowned as he saw that the texts were from Y/n. Multiple ones.
McNugget: Hey, I felt really sick all of a sudden so I went home.
McNugget: I'm sorry
McNugget: Tell Ms. Ral I'm sorry.
McNugget: Take care
His heart dropped at what he read and he quickly got up from his seat to make his way to the open door. He stood at the door frame and searched around the nearly empty campus in hopes of spotting Y/n from afar. But there was no sign of the girl.
"Hey, Armin, you ok?"
The blue-eyed boy looked up to see Ms. Ral and Mr. Ackerman carrying what looked to be heavy boxes, Mr. Ackerman carrying three while Ms. Ral struggled to carry the one she had.
Armin hurried to step aside for the both of them, holding the door wide open and then reentering the room.
Ms. Ral grunted as she set the box on the floor at the front of the room. She was catching her breath until she realized something was off.
"Hey, where did Y/n go?" She looked at Armin's crestfallen face, and the boy stood unenthused by the poster, looking down at the supplies.
"She had to leave because she wasn't feeling so good all of a sudden."
Ms. Ral gave Armin a sympathetic look and walked over to where the boy was.
"Is she going to be ok? Do you want to go to check up on her?"
Mr. Ackerman scoffed in the distance and gained the attention of Ms. Ral and Armin.
"Any chance she could be faking it to get out of doing some work on Valentine's Day? She could be meeting with her boyfriend right now for all we know."
"Levi!" Ms. Ral exclaimed.
Armin was quick to frown and challenge Mr. Ackerman's suggestion.
"Y/n doesn't have a boyfriend. And even if she did, she wouldn't flake out on a project because of that."
Mr. Ackerman raised his hands in surrender as soon as he heard the blonde's strong convictions on the situation.
Ms. Ral glared in annoyance at the man before turning back to look at the concerned boy in front of her.
"Armin, you can go." The woman smiled reassuringly at him, reaching down to grab the scratch paper that Y/n and Armin had worked on. "I see you two worked out the details, I can finish this up later."
Armin was ushered out of the classroom by Ms. Ral, and he heard the door shut behind him.
He took long, strident steps and walked briskly towards Y/n's house, wondering how such a perfect day had soured all of a sudden. He simply hoped the girl had gotten home safe and was resting.
He pulled out his phone and texted her.
Mr. Goldilocks: Hey, I'm coming over to look after you.
He was about to turn his phone off, but he got a rapid fire response.
McNugget: Please don't. I'd like to be alone.
If Armin wasn't worried before, he certainly was now.
The blonde stopped in his track on the sidewalk to grimace down at the message. The whole situation was puzzling to him. Typically, whenever he and Y/n would get sick, they always came over to keep the other company. But for Y/n to isolate herself? Armin was puzzled. He felt as if something more was going on. As if he had missed something earlier.
He also felt conflicted. He wondered if he should just ignore Y/n and go over anyways, just in case something was gravely wrong with the girl. But he also wanted to respect her wishes.
He took the latter route and went home, sending Y/n one last text for the day.
Mr. Goldilocks: Ok, but let me know if you need anything and I'll pop on over. Please feel better, Y/n
That afternoon when Armin got home, he found himself sitting on his couch, unmoving and docile. He fell right asleep through a rerun of The Office, and when his grandfather came over to lay a blanket over him and give him a kiss on the head, the blonde slept through it all.
He slept trying to shake off the unease that he had felt in the pit of his stomach after receiving Y/n's texts.
He would later come to find out that something did happen. And that he was right all along to assume that something would be different on Valentine's Day.
