Jean continued to hold out the item for her.
"Yes. I hope you like it."
Mikasa took the small box into her hands and eyed it before setting her now fully widened eyes onto Jean, who felt small under the girl's gaze.
"Why did you get me these?" She asked unsure and quietly.
Jean didn't quite know how to respond. Usually, he would retreat behind his normal vocabulary of suave words, but he kept Y/n's advice in mind. He also remembered the homework that he was sent home with.
"Become her friend, first of all. Be there for her," Y/n had said to him through text. He didn't know why, but he had always craved a friendship with the enigmatic Mikasa. And he had made up his mind to make it happen.
"Because I want to be friends with you!" He blurted out more confidently, taking the girl by surprise.
With flushed cheeks, Mikasa stared at him, her lips pressed into a thin line.
"Why?"
"I don't know. I just think you're a cool person."
"But you don't know me, Jean..."
"But I'd like to. Do I need more of a reason than that?" He genuinely questioned and Mikasa didn't know how to respond. The only thing she did was shake her head, and Jean grinned at her.
"Then all I can say is that I want to be your friend just 'cause."
He brought his other hand out of hiding and handed the small sewing kit over to the girl.
"I also got you this, since I thought there might be a time where you would need to patch up that scarf of yours."
Mikasa stared down at the kit that was now in her hands. She saw a thimble of red string inside the tiny package along with a needle and a miniature pair of scissors. The thread was about the exact same shade as her scarf.
Her chest constricted in a way that was foreign to her, and her eyes shone with muted glee. Bringing her scarf up to cover her mouth, Mikasa hid a ghost of a smile as she kept turning over the kit in her hand to study it.
"I appreciate it. Thank you," she stated in her usual matte voice. But Jean did a double take as he thought he heard what sounded to be slight joy in Mikasa's voice.
Jean smiled gently.
"You're welcome, Mikasa. I hope to see you around more often."
The boy calmly walked off towards his bike, his heart hammering hard against his chest, and as soon as he made sure that Mikasa had gone off on her own way, he jumped high and pumped his fist in the air triumphantly.
"Fuck yeah!"
He cheered to himself even if he got weird stares from passing students and he hopped onto his bike, riding off energetically towards home.
He felt the rush of air breeze through his brown locks, and he couldn't have felt any better than he did at the moment.
~♢~
Armin and Y/n had gone straight from their sixth period biology class over to Ms. Ral's classroom, with Armin trying his best to quell the immense happiness he felt from having read Y/n's note.
"Y/n, you're such a sap."
The girl next to him tensed up and blushed.
"Oh my God, you read it?" She buried her face in her hands and distanced herself from Armin to have a private heart attack.
