After the graduation ceremony, I head over to the local diner, where the graduation party is taking place.
In the heat of celebration, Hazel turns to me. "Adonia, I have to tell you something. I'm leaving."
My head pounds. I have to be imagaining this. "But--"
"I know we made our plans, but I found somewhere right for me. I already got accepted into college there, and I think it's a good fit."
"But what about our plans? We were supposed to go to the local college together..."
"Donia. I know! But that was before I got accepted into Manhattanville. I know that you don't want me to leave, but you have to let me make my own decision."
I huff out a breath, because she's right. She always is. "Fine. Text me every day, though."
She hugs me. "I promise."
Even with that, my graduation feels like a big letdown now that my best friend won't be with me to face whatever comes next.
By the way, spoiler alert: Hazel never, not once, texted me back after she left.
