26 | Captives | David

Start from the beginning

"What'd he choose?"

Race looks back at David, eyes lighter than they were before. "Whaddaya think?"

"He could have done both," David points out.

"True."

"So...what did happen next?"

Race smiles. "He kissed me."

David smiles back. "I knew it. That's awesome, Race."

"Yeah, it was." Race averts his eyes, then looks back up, this time with more curiosity. "How exactly did Jack react when he found I was gone?"

The last thing he saw of Jack was when he locked him in the closet, David realizes. He doesn't know all the mental beating up Jack went through.

So David tells him the whole story, making sure that Race ends up with the full picture, including the clarification on Jack's regret.

"At first? He was mad. Blink, Mush, and I got him to calm down. Then, he was mad at himself. He walked me back to my place. The whole way, he kept going on about how sorry he was and he was afraid he ruined your guys' relationship for good."

"Aw, no-"

"I told him that you'd forgive him, but he kept going on, upset, blaming himself for everything. I can guarantee you, Racetrack, that Jack is thoroughly sorry for what he did."

"It's okay." Race sighs. "I just wish I could tell him that I forgive him."

They fall into another few minutes of silence. They had a good conversation going, but like all things, it ends, and now they're back to their individual subdued silence.

David thinks about how distraught Jack was two days ago about what he did to Race. About how hopeful Jack was that maybe, just maybe, David might reconsider and sleep at the Lodging House for the night. Now that David thinks back on it, he really isn't sure why he was so hesitant. Now, he wishes he could. It's a little too late to make the decision, but what he wouldn't do to be anywhere but here, wherever in the world here is, with Jack, or with his family, or both, with a warm bed, a roof over his head, and a full stomach before going to bed.

On cue, David's stomach grumbles loudly. That causes Race to snicker. David chuckles along with him.

"Guess I'm really hungry."

"Yeah, I miss food," Race agrees.

They have no way to tell what time it is. The only thing that they know is that they're in a room without windows, with only one light hanging above.

"There's just one thing that doesn't make sense," David says.

"What's that?"

"Why are they going through all this trouble?"

Race shrugs. "Who knows what goes on in their heads?"

"Does...anything go on in their heads?"

That gets Race thinking. "Actually, I don't know." He ponders for a second. "Ya know, that's a good question. This ain't like them. This ain't their style at all. It's very strategic. And...it's a perfect plan, to try and get Spot and Jack to get us for whatever they wants Spot and Jack for. How is this whole thing so dang elaborate?"

But instead of answering any of these or previous questions, they are just left with each other and more and more unanswered questions, destined to only drift above their heads without any resolution.

If I never go into great detail about the conditions that they're kept in...I don't know how to write prison, or many of the logical questions to go with them being held up, so...you're gonna have to fill those lines in.

I don't know if that was good or not. I wanted it to go in a tad bit of a different direction, but ah well.

Before I go further....

HAPPY PRIDE MONTH EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) <3

I have three goals for when I should be finishing this story, depending on how much longer this thing is going to be, how much time I have to write, and how much I write each time: end of June; end of summer; and if really desperate, end of the year. I don't know if I'll be able to work on this during the summer. I'll do what I can, and maybe I will, but I won't count on it.

Please, no homophobia, profanities, hate etc in the comment section.

Best,

~Your Beloved Author (who is listening to their very own pride playlist--a gaylist, if you will)
