In My Eyes

You see me smile with a sparkle in my eyes,
But little do you know what that sparkle hides.
It conceals my pain and my cries
As something dark in me starts to arise.

You don't know of my yearning to take to the skies,
You look past the saddened tears that I dry,
You don't see the fight I always hide,
Because I am happy, that's what you surmise;
Even though I've told you, or at least I've tried
To let you know I'm not alright.
Things are not good, I am not fine.

Inside me, a war is raging that I fight
Where my shields are the smiles I hide behind
And my swords are cuts along my wrists and thighs
That are bloody and fresh and waiting for you to find.

But you don't listen, you don't try
To discover my war before I die
As I struggle to run away from the light
That calls my name as it's tempting and bright.

So look deeper into my guarded life;
Look closer because there, you will find
My hallow soul that gloomily resides
Behind that sparkle in my eyes.
