AN: I have no idea why I'm having so much trouble with this particular series, just total writers block here sorry sorry sorry :,) I really feel so bad... I think the issue may be I'm unused to writing stories that don't rely on action, but instead rely on emotion, so I'm just unsure how to fill all the gaps.

I swear I really tried my best despite that so I hope it's at least adequate

Please forgive me 🥺👉👈 maybe one day if I'm feeling really inspired I'll touch this up

Lan WangJi ghosted his fingertips along the zither path of WangXian, but he couldn't seem to walk it. Seven strings, but he could not find even one worth plucking. He sighed, flattening his two palms over the qin's belly, not quite sure what to do with his wandering hands. A zither's ribbed wires will whisper like crickets when brushed, but these suddenly burst into a hair-raising screech. Lan WangJi yanked his offensive hands away, but the horrible sound continued.

Someone was screaming.

Not just someone.

"Wei Ying!"

From his lap, the guqin tumbled to the ground, strings snapping like whips and kicking up dirt. Lan WangJi tripped over his robes as he grabbed blindly for Bichen. His sword led the way in what would otherwise be a pitch black night.

It couldn't possibly be that an enemy had infiltrated the camp, could it? Was that rogue cultivator an inside man? Fierce corpses, maybe?

It was none of those.

Inside their tent, Wei WuXian was being rocked back and forth in the cradle of Bai LiQin's hold, shivering madly and murmuring unintelligible stories of demonic creatures. Lan WangJi didn't know what to do but stand there in his confused panic. Unreadable, the rogue cultivator looked up at Lan WangJi's, big, awkward frame.

"Lan Er Gongzi?"

"I heard..."

Having trailed off, Bai LiQin spared him any more awkwardness. "Oh, that... I apologize on Wei Ying's behalf for disturbing you. He has... trouble sleeping. I hope Lan Er Gongzi will understand."

He tried to bow around the body clinging to him, but only ended up engaged in a strange hug-like thing.

Lan WangJi quickly put a stop to it, assuring, "No need." (Translation: Stop touching him). Then looking away, he muttered, "I must also apologize, for barging in."
