"Get away from her!" yelled the black-haired man, who stopped in front of Shane.

"Easy, mister." He showed him his police badge. "I'm Officer Blackwell and who are you?"

"It's my second roommate, Lucien," Hailie answered the question for him.

Lust looked at her face with fright that he showed only for a second, then he came back to hiding his emotions under a mask of unending anger. He gazed at Shane with fury, noticing the gun he was holding in his hand.

"What have you done to her?" Lust moved one step closer to that police officer, ready to beat him up.

"Nothing and I don't like accusations of that kind. I might as well ask what you have been doing the whole night?"

Lust ignored his words and looked at Hailie once again. She was crying and gazing at the floor, trying to avoid eye contact with anybody.

"Hailie, what happened?"

Shane placed his hand at Lucien's chest, preventing him from getting closer to the girl.

"I must ask you to leave miss Hailie alone right now. If you want to help, you can wheedle out guests."

Lust caught Shane's hand and removed it from his chest.

"Do it once again."

"And what?" Shane's eyes were full of stubbornness. He had no idea who this guy was and what were his relations with Hailie, but subconsciously he knew that right now it was smarter to keep him away from her.

And I'll kill you, thought Lust, but he couldn't say it out loud, not with Hailie standing behind Mister Loser's back.

"That's what I've though," he scoffed.

It wasn't only the words that made Lust snap, it was the mocking tone as well. His eyes burnt with cruel fire as he clenched fist, ready to throw the punch. He didn't get a chance to do so, because somebody placed hand on his shoulder, preventing a fight. He looked at that person and his thrust for blood disappeared, replaced by surprise. Pride hated him and yet she was standing so close as never, giving him a calm and warning look. For a moment he remembered how it used to be between them, but the thread of understanding vanished as soon as she realized about those unexpected feelings. She quickly took her hand and stepped aside.

"Officer, I must ask for your forgiveness of my friend's behavior. He's overprotectiveness sometimes results in an unwelcoming way of being."

Shane was tired of all people he met in this house, but Pride's kind words and appearance made him look at her nicer than on Lucien.

"And you are?"

"Pride, Hailie's best friend." She leaned closer to him and whispered, "it seems that the three of us are the only people who know about Hailie's past. Mind you telling us what happened?"

"I've been hit in the face, that's all," said Hailie, who was nervous and tired. They've acted like she wasn't here and like she couldn't speak for herself. Right now, she just wanted to go to bed and rest, without telling the same story over and over again. "Shane?"

The way she looked at him made Lust feel uncomfortable. He didn't want to admit it to himself, but he didn't like it at all. In his opinion this guy didn't deserve Hailie.

"If you want to help, you can take care of the house."

He took her by the arm and both of them went upstairs, leaving Pride and Lust to each other.

"You wanted to punch him in front of Hailie? Are you nuts?" she asked, dropping all the kindness she has showed for the human. For Lust she had no kindness.
