There was nothing peaceful about the house Hailie was looking at. Hostile and fearful with a sorrowful history, just like her own. Even though it looked like hovel it had something unique, something that made this house different from any other on this street.

Maybe it won't be so bad living here, thought Hailie glancing at the triangular roof with one side longer than the other, covered in red tiles.

"I can't believe you've chosen this bogey. There are far more pleasant houses in the neighborhood," said her sister Molly.

She wasn't happy about Hailie's choice. They were supposed to live next to each other but Hailie preferred the suburbs rather than the noisy town. Anyway, there was nothing quiet or cozy about this one.

"It was surprisingly cheap and I really don't care what it looks like." Hailie rolled her eyes.

She knew that her sister was unhappy. Molly grumbled about it all morning.

"You shouldn't calculate everything. Mom and dad said they'll pay for your-"

Hailie interrupted her, "Yeah, but I didn't want them to overpay."

She sighed and came up to the door. She struggled for a moment with finding the right key. There were so many of them - one to the basement, second one to the attic and the another for an old, crumbling shed with tools. Finally, she chose the right one and opened the monstrous door with a copper knocker.

"That kind of price, it comes with a history," said Molly, as she entered the house with Hailie. "A very bad one."

Hailie shrugged. The real estate agent had introduced the story of this house to her. Besides, it was easy to find on the internet. There were a lot of murders and suicides over the years among inhabitants. Local people believed this house was haunted, but Hailie didn't really share that opinion. Even if it turns out to be true, she couldn't care less. Maybe if she went mad because of the haunted walls, she would finally have some peace of mind. Some kind of it, at least. For now being a crazy lunatic seemed so much better to her than the indifference she feels every day.

"Hailie, please talk to me." Molly caught her hand.

"I am talking to you," she replied, without even looking at her sister.

"No, you're not. What happened in the past... I understand it was hard and painful, but it's over now."

Hailie instinctively touched her arm, hidden behind a cotton blouse with long sleeves. Nobody could see it, but there was an ugly scar. A souvenir from an event that could hardly be called an accident. She hoped she would never have to relive it again.

"It will never be over," she mumbled under her breath.

The voices from the past were relentless. Every night Hailie heard them in her mind. She didn't need a haunted house to make her life miserable. She already felt haunted by her own self.
