Part 5 - Leaving

I wasn't sure how I left the building or how I found myself sitting in Alex's car. All I wished was that I brought a fake ID. I should have known that the thorough check-in process was going to bite me in the back.

In the car, Michael's voice broke the silence, "Boss, what are we going to do? You know that I didn't do it, right? I will never betray you" He does realize that no one can hear him aside from me, right? He is lucky I also want the answer to this question and courteously repeated after him.

"So.. boss, what next?" I repeated. "Michael, also said that he didn't do it"

Alex looked at me and said, "I know he didn't do it, but the goods are missing, and we need to find them. Michael, give me a recap of what happened that day. When was the last time you saw the goods?"

From this point onwards, I dutifully repeated Michael's story verbally.

"That night, I went to the warehouse to inspect the goods. I looked through each of the 10 crates and saw that they were all loaded with the goods. I brought Marley along to ensure that I didn't miss anything. After we gave our okay, our men took the goods and split them into four batches for distribution."

I'm not sure why, but as I watched Michael while repeating his story, I saw a strange glint in his eyes as he spoke. It was as if he was withholding a piece of key information. After hearing the story, Alex rubbed his forehead and said, "you've repeated our standard procedure, nothing should have gone wrong. Why does Bobby think you stole the goods? He must have some reason to point his fingers to you?"

"Sorry to interrupt," I said, "But what are the implications if we can't find these goods?"

Alex looked at me in the eyes and casually said, "We'll be hunted by the underworld, but, as long as you're near me there is a certain level of protection."

My mind exploded and I said the first thing that came to mind, "I can't do this. I'm quitting!!!" I figured that in order to avoid my new ghost friends, I'll simply move to a city with a lower than average death count and abundant land. On the bright side, I won't run into ghosts on a regular basis. The recluse life was sounding more and more pleasant. I'd rather be scared to death than actually die from an arms war.

Alex, nonchalantly said, "You'll probably die either way. I'm not sure what happened to Michael and let's assume that you're not a serial liar, so given Michael's ending, you can imagine how it will end for you." His eyes gazed into mine. "Welcome to my world. With Michael next to you, you're aware of too many secrets. Don't think about leaving until I let you."
