****12.1 - Thieron****

He stepped out into the darkening fields.

The sun was setting, and the grey clouds darkened the whole place further. The strong winds blew, intertwining his hair with frenzy.

Thieron gathered his long straight hair and tied it into a bun as he walked through fields of maize.

Var-Inu surely had taken up residence in a weird place – or he could even call it brilliant. No one would ever suspect a maize farmer of being Ytèan. He was one among the many maize farmers who grew their crops in the Open Lands. No one paid much attention to the plague-infested Open Lands, anyway.

Thieron exited the fields, the many human workers on the farm nodding at him as he passed them and he reached the open mud roads; where two humans wearing breathing masks were walking, their tools in their hands. Most people in the Open wore breathing masks to protect themselves from the Green Plague and the poor air quality. The men stared at Thieron's unmasked face and continued on their way. Thieron didn't need a mask; he was from Ytèan, and the Plague steered clear of Ytai.

Most humans in the Open were aware of the presence of Ytai. The Ytai kept them safe from the Savages and Creatures – those affected by the radiations of the Wars – and in turn, the humans never spoke of them to anyone. The Leadership was unconcerned about those in the Open, and the humans there needed protection against the man-eating Savages and Creatures. Thieron had always found it a strange sort of coexistence.

Var-Inu had offered him dinner at the farm. Var-Inu never fed anyone who belonged to H'eon. Thieron was an exception. Thieron paid him twice the rate for everything and Var-Inu appreciated it. In fact, if Thieron could be bold about it, he would say Var-Inu kind of liked him and had a soft corner for him in his hard heart. The thought of anyone liking him went beyond his comprehension. No one really liked him; they feared him. On several occasions, he had wondered what Nala and Luka really thought of him.

Thieron made his way on the mud road thinking of all the information Var-Inu had given him. He had the latest news; all the time. There even was a rumor among the Ytai on Earth that he owned two gra'nya – messengers - from the old Ytèan world, who told him everything that happened.

His AIVIO Scroll vibrated. It was a text message from Alton Ivar.

'Come home.' – was all it said.

Thieron cursed loudly. Of course, Alton knew he was in the Open Lands. Thieron couldn't avoid him forever. He hadn't received Ivar's calls since he walked out after punching Dhor-Wo. He had even ignored the blonde Ytai's threatening messages. He had found out from Ba'diur that he had broken Dhor-Wo's jaw and nose. Luka had been delighted to hear that. Dhor-Wo had already got them fixed, but Thieron was proud of his work.

He walked towards the Mansion. It was a half-hour walk, but there were no other means of transport. A few people owned hovercycles, but that's about the only transportation that existed in the Open.

Thieron walked, all the time thinking of what Alton Ivar would say and do to him. Most of the time, he had no choice but to obey what he said. Alton had taken him in when he had no one and given him a life, despite the harsh treatment.

Thieron owed him, and Alton owned him.
