So apparently there's a new fad on WattPad where, if your book is big enough, you can sell ad space on it. ON THE COVER. AD. SPACE.
Look, I may sound like a total hipster asshole, but I love looking at covers. They're normally very artistic (hopefully) and it's one of the joys of reading to me. So when I see that your book got whored out so that some fucking company can tell me about how to remove dirt on my face, I don't read your book. You pissed me off, so I won't read it.
It's not a good first impression, because my first thought is "Oh, this person doesn't care about their stuff because they're just selling one of the crucial parts of it for money." A common argument for this is, somehow, movie rights. Selling movie rights of your book still has artistic value, because the movie is based off of your artistic work. An ad not related to your story at all. It's just wanting money.
This may seem like small thing, but when I come to a bookstore this shit isn't happening. I get the cover as it is, I don't have to pry some stupid fucking ad off of my cover. But on WattPad it's even worse because the covers are digital. I have to stare at that fucking ad the whole time I read your book.
Look, I get it. (I say "Look" way too much). We're all pretty young on here and some company is like "I'll give you a thousand dollars for ad space on your cover!" I don't blame people for accepting it. I'm not mad at them. Maybe slightly disappointed, but it's not their fault. While I wouldn't do it personally, a lot of people don't share my view on how important a nice, artistic cover is to a book, and that's fine.
I am, however, really disappointed in WattPad. They already have plenty of ads all over this fucking site, I don't want to read ads now. What's next, I have to stop every four chapters to watch an ad before proceeding to read the book? I guarantee that will happen eventually. Why do you think they're doing this? That's how companies work, especially on the Internet: integret shitty stuff slowly. This is the beginning. So we might as well all download AdBlock now (which doesn't work on covers! Woo!).
