Chapter Thirty-Three: "The Caleb Combo – Ready For Pickup."

ON THE DAY OF my twenty-fifth birthday,  Angie and Krystal and a boatload of people we knew in Milan were setting up for tonight at the villa. The chaos I could deal with, but my two friends didn't want me involved until later tonight, so I was off doing errands when I decided to stop by Caleb's. His apartment door was already cracked open, leaving me confused. Closing the door behind me and taking off my shoes, I heard him shout, "In the living room."

I barely made it into the living room when I jumped, a hand to my heart at the sight of Caleb's face. Not that anything was wrong with his face but the face mask he was wearing scared the crap out of me. "Oh, my fucking God."

He had arms wide open for a hug, a popsicle in one hand. "I'm sexy, right?"

Yes, but usually without the terrifying mask.

I hit him lightly on the chest, stepping into a brief one-armed hug. Waiting for my heart rate to slow down from the jump scare, I tilted my head up to look at him, huffing. "This is what you've been doing all day? Also, your hair. It looks nice."

He ran a hand through his now short locks, giving me his serious face. "It's like ten o'clock, it's never too late for a face mask. I'm not getting any younger, Octavia. It's a necessity to do what one can to remain, como se dicetimeless."

"You're, como se dice, 25." I deadpanned.

"And then I'm going to be 30, then 45, then 70 then I'm going to be rotting away on my death bed and wondering who the least annoying person in my life was to give my money to."

"Every time I see you, I question why am I always around to hear you say the strangest things?" I joked with him.

"Because the force," He proceeded to move his hands not like he was a character of Star Wars but like he was Doctor Strange. "Brings us together."

"The force," I snickered, moving his hands to clasp them in my own. "Has only made you crazier every time I see you." I was about to say more when I spotted the figure on the couch in the same face mask as Caleb. "Hi."

The man gave me a two-fingered wave eating a popsicle like Caleb. He was looking at me like he was trying to figure out where I was from. "English?"

"The only language I'm fluent in," I informed him. "Sorry."

He waved a hand in dismissal. "It's all good. Would have let Caleb here be our translator if I was lazy."

Caleb snorted, leaning against the wall. "I wouldn't have done anything for you, dumbass."
