Luke:

Baby's first word

"Can you say daddy?" Sat on the couch, you occupied yourself with watching your husband trying to get his daughter to talk. The little girl was placed in his lap, her back to his chest as she turned her head to see her father's face as he spoke. Luke had been trying to get Amelia to say 'daddy' for the past few days after reading online that it was most likely now that she was 11 months old. The furthest he'd gotten was getting his baby girl to say the first syllable of the word.

"Luke, stop putting so much pressure on her." You told the man holding your daughter as she went back to focusing on the small, square book with cardboard-like pages that she'd been gripping in her hands for the past twenty minutes. When you spoke to Luke, you had a slight giggle in your tone, letting him know you weren't too serious on the matter though you could tell that Amelia was less than interested in her dad.

"She's gonna say it. I can feel it." once more, you let out a chuckle at how ridiculous he was being. You knew that every child developed at its own pace and you weren't worried that Amelia hadn't said a real word yet. It was common amongst babies her age to not speak and you made sure to not pester your daughter like Luke had been doing.

The dad put his hands on both sides of Amelia's waist and lifted her up and off his lap, placing her on the floor in front of him with his child now facing him. "Alright, Amelia, say 'daddy'. C'mon princess, I know you can." It truly was a funny sight to see Luke so worked up on making his daughter speak. The baby girl looked from her dad's face back down to her book, letting out a faint sound of what sounded like the first syllable of the word.

"Okay, baby, you've got the first part. Now say 'dee', da-dee." It was hard for you to deny the fact that Luke trying to make Amelia speak was incredibly adorable. Your husband had a certain glint of excitement in his eyes as he got closer to what he wanted to hear. Luke had always been a proud dad from the moment Amelia was born. Even if she wasn't even a year old, he found her accomplishments, like sitting on her own and learning to crawl, to be the most incredible things. He got excited very easily when it came to his princess and had no problem bragging about her to his friends or in interviews. Your husband always told you since you found out you were pregnant that your child would be the most wonderful and remarkable child and to this day, you never once doubted what he said.

"Dada." Although it wasn't exactly what Luke had been telling his daughter, it still came out with the same meaning. She'd been saying the first syllable for a good five minutes before repeating it close enough to form what sounded like her father's word. And as soon as the word left her little mouth, her dad's eyes bulged out of his head, lifting his little girl high up in the air before bringing her down to kiss her cheek over and over.

"You said it! See, I knew you could do it. Daddy believed in you, unlike Mommy." Luke congratulated his daughter while teasing you and you shot him a playful glare, joining your family on the living room floor where you listened to Amelia confidently repeat her first word.

Ashton:

Baby's first steps

"Are you going to go to Mommy?" Ashton held his son's little hand, hoping he'd go ahead and make the next move in walking, but Caleb just stayed standing with the help of his dad. The little boy let out a giggle, looking up at his father who was hoping to see his son walk before he had to leave with his band.

"C'mon sweetie, come to Mommy." You encouraged your baby boy, arms opened in anticipation. You'd been trying all week to help Caleb take his first steps, wanting Ashton to be around for them just as much as Ashton himself did. The next day, your husband would be leaving for a promotional tour around Europe with his band and he was taking advantage of every single second he had left with his family. This was the first time he'd be leaving since Caleb was born and he wasn't quite sure if he was ready to go. Ashton loved his career, absolutely adored it, however his family came out on top on the list of things that were the most important to him.

"I don't know, babe. Maybe he just doesn't want to walk right now." You immediately distinguished Ashton's disappointment when he spoke. If it was any regular day, the dad wouldn't be so eager to see Caleb walk, but it wasn't an ordinary day. It was the day before he left for a two week tour and it was slowly killing him inside to know that his son could potentially hit a few milestones while he's away.

"I'm sorry, Ash. We can't force him into this though, you know? Like, we can't just make him walk." You were sadden by your lover's discontent over the situation, watching as he stayed up and slightly bent over, hopeful that if he kept holding his son up he'd take a few steps towards you.

"I know," he sighed, looking down at Caleb who was smiling widely, not aware of his dad's sorrow. "I just don't get why he can't do it by himself. We've walked with him plenty of times, but as soon we let go, he falls on his ass." It was your turn to let out a sigh, disliking that Ashton was unhappy on his last day at home.

"If he does walk when you're away, I'll be sure to record it and send it to you and FaceTime you. Don't you worry, honey." You tried your best to reassure your husband, but as defeated as he had sounded, he didn't look like he was ready to give up.

"Alright, Caleb. Walk to Mommy, you can do it." You watched the little boy move towards you with the help of his dad, gripping his hands around Ashton's fingers. The father started slowly and carefully taking his hands away from his son and, unlike all the other previous tries, Caleb kept moving his little legs in your direction. It was just a matter of seconds before he plopped down on his bum with a giggle, but he had taken a good five steps and that was enough for Ashton and you to celebrate as his first steps.

"He did it!" Ashton's exclamation confused Caleb and the expression the child wore on his face staid there when his father brought him into his arms. "You did it, buddy!" The young boy wasn't quite sure what he'd done, but the smile that stretched on both his father and his mother's faces was enough to make him erupt in a fit of giggles and hand clapping
