Chapter 17: I Just Couldn’t Help It

Nina’s POV

I moved around the dance floor, twirling and laughing with my friends as the music played. This was a lot more fun than I thought it would be. It was certainly not a posh event with only classical music, no certainly not. It had recent music and close to everyone was dancing. Most of the seniors showed up too.

I glanced over to Dylan’s table to see him sitting with all the boys, but instead of being on his phone or talking to the other boys, he was staring intently at me, a small smile playing on his lips. A blush crept its way onto my cheeks as I grinned back, and then looked towards the floor.

“Nina!!” Emma squealed and grabbed my hands, starting to move around the dance floor. I noticed Dylan not in his seat anymore and when I looked around the dance floor, Ronnie was not here either. My stomach plummeted as the worst case scenarios played in my mind.

“I’ll be right back,” I told Emma and then hurriedly walked towards the hallway where the bathroom was placed. I pushed open the doors, my heels clicking against the floor. I heard voices coming from around the hall immediately making me sick. My heart was pounding and my hands started to become clammy.

Was he really going to cheat on me with Ronnie? I could not believe that this might be it; he actually might hurt me once again by cheating on me with Ronnie. I knew in the beginning that I was going to get hurt again, I just knew it. But then I had to go and start liking him again! What the hell was wrong with me?!

As I listened in on the two voices, I learned that it was in fact, Ronnie and Dylan speaking. It felt like a knife was plunged through my heart repeatedly, tearing it open.  I hid myself behind the wall, and listened in on their conversation.

“God! You two are so sickening! I don’t get what’s so special about her! She’s no one special!” She yelled, as I peered around the corner, I saw her cheeks red with anger and her fists clenched. I whirled back around so that they wouldn’t see me and let out a breath of relief.

So he wasn’t exactly cheating on me, but it was obvious that it was me they were arguing about.

“She’s special because she’s Nina Parris! I’m with her and I don’t want anyone but her, especially not you,” I let out a small gasp as I heard his words. Did he really feel that way? That I was the only one he wanted? Could it even be possible that he liked me as much I liked him, because come on… I really, really, liked him.

“And since you are not her in any way, shape, or form and never could be her, get the fuck out of my way,” I heard footsteps coming closer to me but I was too in shock to hide. Dylan rounded the corner, the smirk on his face evident. It immediately dropped as he locked eyes with me and his mouth parted slightly. “Nina?”

“I thought you were cheating on me,” I breathed a laugh and shook my head, trying to rid the thoughts of my stupid conclusion.

“Is that what you thought that was?! I swear, it was not.” He promised, looking taken aback and utterly lost.

“I know, I heard you guys,” I smiled gratefully, and looked up at him through my eyelashes.

“How much did you hear?” He lifted up my chin with his fingers leaving me nowhere to look but into his captivating, lovely eyes.

“Of course she would hear!” Ronnie shrieked, but thankfully her voice could not be heard through the doors.

"You know what, Ronnie?" I smiled, my face nearing hers. "I believe MY boyfriend has just made his feelings about you and your cheap, ghetto Barbie outfit known. Do us a favor and give us some privacy and leave while a shred of your over-inflated dignity is still intact, okay? I mean, I'm not like you sweetie, I don't like an audience." I said my finger caressing then flicking her chin.
