Chapter 39

Will lunged at her, giving her no chance to escape the room.  She did not even hesitate to bring the letter opener up and stab him.  If the man was innocent, why would he try to attack her?  Will stopped and looked at her with wide eyes before looking down at his arm.

“What was that for?” he mumbled.

“You were trying to attack me!” she hissed at him in a whisper.

He shook his head and took a step closer.  Her legs spread apart; her hands came up to deflect any hits he may try to get in.  She was ready to fight.  There was no way that she would was going to let the man take her life away from her.  Sending her a hurt look, he held his hands up and retreated.  He turned and gave her his back as he sat down on the bed.  She watched as his hand came up.  With a wince, he pulled the letter opener from his arm.  She kept her eyes on the weapon.

“I am not going to hurt you,” he mumbled while tossing the letter opener across the room.  “Will you please just let me explain, Cassie?  We have been friends for as long as I can remember; I love you like a sister, and you automatically jump to conclusions.”

Cassandra bit her lip.  He was right; they had been friends for a long time.  How could she not give him a chance, just a chance to explain?  She crossed the room.  Bending down, she picked the bloody letter opener up while keeping her eyes on him.Motioning with her weapon, she said, “Explain.”

He eyed the weapon wearily.  “I was trying to duplicate your letter.”

“You did a damned good job of it.”

“Did you just say ‘damned?’” he asked in humor.  “I cannot believe our Cassie cursed.”

“I am not your Cassie!  My name is Cassandra, and I want to know what you are doing here, and why!”

“I was trying to duplicate your letter,” he repeated, holding his hand up as she tried to talk again.  “Let me finish.  I was attempting to duplicate it for a reason.  I have a plan.”

The Will she knew smiled at her with mischief in his eyes.  She immediately relaxed and sent him a small smile.  “Just tell me what your plan is.”

“Your father, Cassie, don’t be mad at him, but he lied to you and Colin.  He is keeping secrets from you because he thinks it can keep you safe, but he will just hurt you in the end.  I do not think he believed you would fall in love so quickly, and even if you tell him that, he will not listen.  In his mind, nothing is more important than keeping you safe.  Not even your happiness.”

“What secrets?”

He shook his head at me.  “I cannot tell you, love.  You know it is not my secret to tell.  I can do something though.”

Her suspicions rose.  “What?”

“Kidnap you before he does.”

She dropped down into a nearby chair.  “You cannot kidnap me.  What would Colin do?  Do you honestly think the man would not find a way to free me?  I believe that he loves me, and I believe that he would hunt you down.”

Will laughed and eased himself back onto the bed.  “The man does love you.  How could someone love another that much?  It is obvious that you love him too.  I just find it, unattainable.  Like I will never have what the two of you have, it makes me envious.  I want to preserve what the two of you have; you deserve to be happy for once.  That is why I am doing what I am.”

“Kidnapping me?  You are kidnapping me because you want to preserve my happiness?  I am not trying to sound repetitive, by why would you go through all of this?  Father cannot take me; I belong to Colin now.  He is my husband.”
